COMMEMORATING the retirement of the No. 20 jersey
worn by Stony Brook's Jameel Warney, a three-time
America East Player of the Year and the most
decorated player in Seawolves basketball history
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
outstanding athletes who have distinguished themselves through their
exceptional performance, attaining unprecedented success and the highest
level of personal achievement; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the retirement of the No. 20 jersey worn by Stony Brook's
Jameel Warney, a three-time America East Player of the Year and the most
decorated player in Seawolves basketball history; and
WHEREAS, This momentous occasion will be celebrated with a Halftime
Ceremony during Stony Brook's home game against Binghamton on Saturday,
February 18, 2017, at Island Federal Credit Union Arena, Stony Brook,
New York; and
WHEREAS, No student-athlete has had a greater impact on Stony Brook
than Jameel Warney; he represented the University and Long Island in a
first class manner at all times through his work ethic, integrity and
genuine nature; and
WHEREAS, Jameel Warney completed his Stony Brook basketball career
as the all-time leader in points, rebounds, blocks and games played; he
was the second-fastest player in program history to reach the
1,000-point mark, tallying 2,132 through his four-year career; and
WHEREAS, A Plainfield, New Jersey native, Jameel Warney is the only
Stony Brook player to score 40-plus points in a game after putting up 43
in the America East championship game against Vermont last season; he is
one of 108 players in NCAA history to score 2,000 points and grab 1,000
rebounds; and
WHEREAS, Jameel Warney played in the NBA Summer League and
participated in training camp with the Dallas Mavericks this past fall;
he is currently playing for the Texas Legends of the NBA Development
League and is averaging 15 points and seven rebounds per game, notching
a double-double on three occasions in his debut season; and
WHEREAS, An honorable mention AP All-American, Jameel Warney's
legacy at Stony Brook is unmatched; his No. 20 will join longtime major
league pitcher and Stony Brook Hall of Famer Joe Nathan's No. 22 as the
only retired numbers in the school's history; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that when
individuals of such outstanding athletic accomplishments are brought to
our attention, they should be recognized by all members of this great
Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the retirement of the No. 20 jersey worn by Stony Brook's
Jameel Warney, a three-time America East Player of the Year and the most
decorated player in Seawolves basketball history; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Jameel Warney.
