COMMEMORATING the 125th Anniversary of the
Ossining Public Library
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the quality and character of life in the communities across the great
State of New York is reflective of certain exemplary institutions whose
purpose is dedicated to serving the community and the needs of its
citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 125th Anniversary of the Ossining Public Library; this
momentous occasion will be recognized on Saturday, February 10, 2018,
kicking off a year's worth of programs and activities for all ages,
celebrating the library, the Ossining community and 125 years of history
and culture; and
WHEREAS, The Sing Sing Public Library, later known as the Ossining
Public Library, was founded by the people of Ossining and officially
opened its doors as a public library in 1893; and
WHEREAS, The physical location of the library changed several times,
from its beginnings in the superintendent's office at Park School, to
the Twiggar Building on Main Street, and finally to its current home on
Croton Avenue; and
WHEREAS, Remaining true to its mission, the Ossining Public Library
has provided the people of Ossining with access to books, resources and
information for more than a century; and
WHEREAS, The Ossining Public Library has served the local community
through two World Wars, the Great Depression, and an unprecedented boom
in media and technology that has transformed the library and library
services; and
WHEREAS, Over its distinguished 125-year history, the Ossining
Public Library has demonstrated continuous service to the residents and
communities which it serves; and
WHEREAS, The success of the Ossining Public Library is in direct
correlation to the efforts of its staff, whose involvement is, and
always has been, characterized by an impressive commitment, an unbridled
enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of excellence in all
endeavors on behalf of the library and the community it serves; and
WHEREAS, Steeped in a proud and distinguished history, the Ossining
Public Library may take just pride in its purposeful growth, as it looks
forward to continuing to serve the educational, cultural and
intellectual needs of the community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 125th Anniversary of the Ossining Public Library; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Ossining Public Library.
