HONORING Daniel Hershberg upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of the 2018 Circle of
Humanity Award by Temple Israel in Albany, New York

WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of
certain extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their
valued contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Daniel
Hershberg upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the
Circle of Humanity Award by Temple Israel to be celebrated at a dinner
on Sunday, April 15, 2018, at its Social Hall in Albany, New York; and

WHEREAS, The Circle of Humanity Award is presented to local
individuals and institutions who devote themselves to making a positive
difference in their community and beyond; and

WHEREAS, This auspicious award is given to those who have shown
courage and initiative to reach out, together, to create an atmosphere
that is at once positive, exciting and contagious, spreading its arms in
an extension of human circles which includes those in every walk of
life; Daniel Hershberg epitomizes this definition; and

WHEREAS, A lifelong resident of Albany, Daniel "Dan" Hershberg was
born to the late Ben and Anne Gewirtzman Hershberg; in 1962, he earned
his Bachelor of Civil Engineering degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute where he was inducted into the Phalanx Honorary Society, and
elected to the Who's Who in American Universities and College; he was
also a member of both the hockey and football teams; and

WHEREAS, A licensed professional engineer and land surveyor, Dan
Hershberg is the managing partner of Hershberg & Hershberg; throughout
his illustrious career, he has designed many iconic outdoor sites in the
Capital District including the New Course at Capital Hills, the
Washington Park Amphitheater, Westland Hills Park, the Martin Luther
King Memorial in Lincoln Park, Island Creek Park, Boght Area Baseball
Complex, West Albany Ballfields, Albany Boatshed, Lincoln Park and
Washington Park Tennis Courts, Mohawk Harbor, as well as numerous
single-family housing, apartments and senior citizens housing projects;
and

WHEREAS, Dan Hershberg was also the site engineer for the Pastures
Urban Renewal Project, and has been involved in many significant
commercial designs such as 677 Broadway, CDPHP Headquarters, SEFCU
Headquarters, Cap Comm Headquarters, Price Chopper Freezer Warehouse,
FedEx Terminal, St. Peters Parking Garage, Teresian House Alzheimer's
Unit, Daughters of Sarah Memory Enhancement Unit and Massry Residence,
the Great Oaks Office Park, Armory Center, UJFNENY building, Vista
Technology Park, and University Heights; and

WHEREAS, A faithful member of Temple Israel, Dan Hershberg is
devoted to his Jewish heritage; for most of his adult life, he has been
active in Jewish communal affairs and education; for 27 of those years,
he volunteered his time and energy as the Acting Business Manager of the
Hebrew Academy of the Capital District; he also held the title of
President of the Academy, and served as chair of numerous school
fundraising efforts; and

WHEREAS, In addition, Dan Hershberg served as President of the
Greater Albany Jewish Federation, and for many years, he was an active
participant of its successor organization, the United Jewish Federation
of Northeastern New York; and

WHEREAS, For his steadfast and unremitting commitment to the Jewish
community, Dan Hershberg was the recipient of B'nai Brith Covenant
Award; the Hershbergs were also named Family of the Year by the school
and by the Shomray Torah Society; and

WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his four children, Deborah
Ellenbogen, Adam Hershberg, Micah Hershberg, and Rachel Hershberg; and
his 10 grandchildren, all of whom have shown him love and support and
rejoice in his many achievements; and

WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by
individuals for the benefit of others which Dan Hershberg has displayed
throughout his life; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Daniel Hershberg upon the occasion of his designation as recipient
of the Circle of Humanity Award by Temple Israel in Albany, New York;
and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Daniel Hershberg.
