COMMENDING Brooklyn Historical Society upon the
occasion of hosting its 15th Annual Library Dinner
on May 1, 2019

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the quality and character of life in the communities across New York
State are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those
organizations and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare
of the community and its citizenry; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend the Brooklyn Historical Society upon the occasion of hosting its
15th Annual Library Dinner on Wednesday, May 1, 2019, in Brooklyn, New
York; and

WHEREAS, Founded in 1863, Brooklyn Historical Society (BHS) is a
nationally recognized urban history center dedicated to preserving and
encouraging the study of Brooklyn's extraordinary and complex history;
and

WHEREAS, Brooklyn Historical Society is a vibrant museum, a
world-renowned archives and special collections library, a cutting-edge
education center, and a hub for community dialogue; and

WHEREAS, Located in a landmark 1881 building designed by architect
George Browne Post, Brooklyn Historical Society welcomes both residents
and visitors from around the world to learn about Brooklyn's past,
present, and future; and

WHEREAS, Brooklyn Historical Society serves more than 45,000 on-site
visitors each year, including nearly 15,000 students and teachers, 80%
of whom come from Title I schools throughout Brooklyn; and

WHEREAS, Furthermore, through free online resources, including
online exhibitions, curriculum materials, new media initiatives,
podcasts, and more, Brooklyn Historical Society reaches an additional
250,000 people annually; and

WHEREAS, Remaining true to its mission, Brooklyn Historical Society
connects the past to the present and makes the vibrant history of
Brooklyn tangible, relevant, and meaningful for today's diverse
communities, and for generations to come; and

WHEREAS, Over its distinguished history, Brooklyn Historical Society
has demonstrated continuous service to the residents and communities
which it serves; and

WHEREAS, The success of Brooklyn Historical Society is in direct
correlation to the efforts of its dedicated staff, whose involvement is,
and always has been, characterized by an impressive commitment, an
unbridled enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of excellence in

all endeavors on behalf of the organization and the community it serves;
and

WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents an opportunity for this
Legislative Body to recognize and pay tribute to Brooklyn Historical
Society; and

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that when
individuals and organizations of such noble aims and accomplishments are
brought to our attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by
all the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Brooklyn Historical Society upon the occasion of hosting its
15th Annual Library Dinner on May 1, 2019; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Brooklyn Historical Society.
