COMMEMORATING the 100th Anniversary of the Bay
Shore Jewish Center
WHEREAS, Religious institutions, and the many spiritual, social and
educational benefits they confer, play a vital role in the development
of the moral fabric of a responsible citizenry; and
WHEREAS, It is the tradition of this State and this Nation to pay
tribute to those institutions and individuals who have contributed to
the ethical and spiritual values of their communities; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Bay Shore Jewish Center, to be
celebrated with a Dinner Dance on Sunday, October 27, 2019; and
WHEREAS, The Bay Shore Jewish Center is an egalitarian Conservative
synagogue and Hebrew School located in Bay Shore on the South Shore of
Long Island; its minyan began in 1899, and the community incorporated 20
years later, in 1919; and
WHEREAS, Remaining true to its mission, the Bay Shore Jewish Center
offers everyone the services and support of a Jewish community; for the
newcomer, it is a gateway to learning and prayer; for the spiritual
seeker, it offers meditation and an openness to the mystical traditions
of Judaism; and for those raised in Jewish homes, it offers continuity
and growth; and
WHEREAS, Moreover, the Bay Shore Jewish Center also provides
ceremonies for baby-naming, rituals for healing, support and guidance in
all the life-cycle events, and a plot of earth for burial; and
WHEREAS, The Bay Shore Jewish Center also provides a free Hebrew
school education to the children of members, giving them a foundation
which prepares them to become a bar or bat mitzvah; and
WHEREAS, In addition to Rabbi Marvin Demant, the Bay Shore Jewish
Center is managed by Cantor Arlene Zucker, who leads services on Friday
nights and holidays as well as being a guide for its b'nai mizvot, and
Ritual Director, Al Beja, who ensures all worshippers have the
opportunity for synagogue honors; and
WHEREAS, The Bay Shore Jewish Center stands on the threshold of
tomorrow, prepared to meet the challenges of the coming decades while
retaining that spiritual resolve which characterizes its past; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to take note of
enduring religious institutions and to bring such institutions to the
attention of the people of this Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Bay Shore Jewish Center, fully
confident that this commemoration reflects the belief in those values
which enhance the dignity and purpose of life; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Rabbi Marvin Demant, Bay Shore Jewish Center.
