COMMENDING Fannie Porter posthumously upon the
occasion of being named a Legacy Honoree by the
National Association of University Women, Brooklyn
Branch, on June 8, 2019
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
honor those distinguished citizens who would devote their life's work
and purpose to community service, contributing to the welfare of the
citizens of their communities and this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Fannie Porter posthumously upon the occasion of being named a
Legacy Honoree by the National Association of University Women, Brooklyn
Branch, to be celebrated at its 65th Anniversary Scholarship and Awards
Brunch on Saturday, June 8, 2019, at Top Civic Center, Brooklyn; and
WHEREAS, Founded in 1910 and incorporated in 1924, the mission of
the National Association of University Women (NAUW) is to serve women,
youth and the disadvantaged in the communities of this nation, as well
as in developing countries, by addressing educational issues, advancing
the status of women's issues, and strategically partnering with allied
organizations; and
WHEREAS, One of the earliest members of NAUW Brooklyn Branch, Fannie
Porter served in many official capacities for this vital organization,
including the esteemed position of President; and
WHEREAS, After receiving both her bachelor's and master's degrees in
Education from Hunter College, City University of New York, Fannie
Porter continued her education at New York University and Penn State
where she obtained her Supervision and Reading License; she also
attended Long Island University, Brooklyn - Downtown Campus and obtained
a degree in Language Arts and Reading; and
WHEREAS, Upon her retirement as a Principal of the New York City
Board of Education in 1991, Fannie Porter pursued her passion for
helping youth further their education and founded, along with her
siblings, The Porter Foundation, Inc., which provides high school
graduates with scholarships to begin their college education; and
WHEREAS, In addition to her role as President of the National
Association of the University Women, Brooklyn Branch, Fannie Porter was
a member of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa; she was also a
member of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional
Women-Brooklyn Chapter, and a member of the Brooklyn Reading Council;
and
WHEREAS, An active member at Bethany Baptist Church since early
childhood, Fannie Porter was the first Director of the Child Development
Center, a member of the Christ Education Board, a Sunday-School teacher,
Girl Scout Assistant, Scholarship Council and President of the Deaconess
Board; and
WHEREAS, It has always been the objective of this Legislative Body
to honor and support those individuals who have displayed their
commitment to the betterment of their communities, and it is the intent
of this Legislative Body to inscribe upon its records, this tribute to
Fannie Porter, that future generations may know and appreciate her
admirable character, her many benevolent deeds, and the respect and
esteem in which she was held by her peers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Fannie Porter posthumously upon the occasion of being named a
Legacy Honoree by the National Association of University Women, Brooklyn
Branch; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Fannie Porter.
