COMMEMORATING the 150th Anniversary of the Village
of Copenhagen

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate the distinguished histories of the communities which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Village of Copenhagen, New
York, to be celebrated August 22-24, 2019; and

WHEREAS, This auspicious event will include a parade, fireworks,
music, a civil war reenactment, craft and car show, as well as horseshoe
and corn hole tournaments; and

WHEREAS, Named after the capital of Denmark, the Village of
Copenhagen is located in Lewis County and situated between Watertown and
Lowville; and

WHEREAS, The area which is now Copenhagen was first used by the
Oneida Indians as part of their hunting grounds; it was referred to as
"Old Ash Swamp" because black ash grew there; and

WHEREAS, In the spring of 1801, Nathan Munger and his son Nathan,
both millwrights, traveled down the Black River to the Deer River and
settled in a spot about one-half mile above High Falls where they set up
a mill and put it into operation; and

WHEREAS, In 1803, the Mungers built a grist mill with one run out of
burr stones; it was put into operation in time to grind the first wheat
to be grown in the town; the grist mill was located directly below the
saw mill near the late Frank Arnold's garage on Cataract Street in the
Village of Copenhagen; and

WHEREAS, This settlement, known as Munger Mills, would officially
become the Village of Copenhagen on January 12, 1869; homes and places
of business sprang up in the area; Levi Barres built the first home and
Urial Twitchell opened the first store; and

WHEREAS, Furthermore, the first inn was built on the hill south of
Copenhagen on the site of the present Cottage Inn, where Andrew Mills
served as the Village's first innkeeper; and

WHEREAS, Of historic origin, and remaining fruitful over the ebb and
flow of decades of growth and change, the Village of Copenhagen
continues to provide the quintessential quality of life for its
residents; and

WHEREAS, The residents of the Village of Copenhagen have a bright
outlook for the future of their community, which remains a beautiful
place in which to live and raise a family; and

WHEREAS, In recognition of the Village of Copenhagen's rich history
and enduring contribution to the State of New York, this Legislative
Body is proud to pay tribute to this spirited town upon the occasion of
its 150th Anniversary; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Village of Copenhagen, New
York, recognizing the significance of the role it continues to play in
the life of the community of the State of New York; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Village of Copenhagen, New York.
