HONORING the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) upon
the occasion of its designation as recipient of the
Global Community Leadership Award by the National
Urban Technology Center, Inc. on June 12, 2019
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the quality and character of life in the communities across New York
State are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those
organizations which would devote themselves to the welfare of the
community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) upon the occasion of its designation as
recipient of the Global Community Leadership Award by the National Urban
Technology Center, Inc. to be celebrated at its 24th Annual Gala Awards
Dinner on Wednesday, June 12, 2019, at the Park Hyatt in New York, New
York; and
WHEREAS, The National Urban Technology was founded in 1995, by
former IBM executive Pat Bransford to build innovative technology
training programs and provide resources for academic and financial
literacy skills in underserved communities; and
WHEREAS, For over 24 years, this not-for-profit educational
corporation has connected students and families, in underserved
communities, to digital literacy, financial literacy, comprehensive
health education and life skills which are critical to academic and
career success; it has also built over 500 technology centers in
disadvantaged communities across the country to provide access to jobs;
and
WHEREAS, Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) is a United States-based
nonprofit environmental advocacy group known for its work on issues
including global warming, ecosystem restoration, oceans, and human
health, and advocates using sound science, economics and law to find
environmental solutions that work; it is nonpartisan, and its work often
supports market-based solutions to environmental problems; and
WHEREAS, EDF's headquarters are located in New York City, with
offices across the United States, with scientists and policy specialists
working worldwide; regional offices more focused on local issues and
policies include Austin, Texas; Boston, Massachusetts; Boulder,
Colorado; Los Angeles, California; Raleigh, North Carolina; Sacramento,
California; San Francisco, California; Washington, D.C.; and
WHEREAS, Since 1984, Fred Krupp has served as the President of EDF;
in May of 2011, he was among a group of experts named by United States
Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu to a subcommittee of the
Energy Advisory Board which was charged with making recommendations to
improve the safety and environmental performance of natural gas
hydraulic fracturing from shale formations; and
WHEREAS, In 1991, EDF was called "America's most economically
literate green campaigners" by The Economist, was ranked first among
environmental groups in a 2007 Financial Times global study of 850
business-nonprofit partnerships, and received a four-star rating from
Charity Navigator; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
organizations of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Environmental Defense Fund (EDF) upon the occasion of its
designation as recipient of the Global Community Leadership Award by the
National Urban Technology Center, Inc. on June 12, 2019; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Fred Krupp, President, Environmental Defense Fund (EDF).
