HONORING Dr. L. Nelson Hopkins upon the occasion
of his designation as recipient of the Chancellor
Charles P. Norton Medal by The State University of
New York at Buffalo

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
commend and recognize those esteemed individuals and institutions within
the medical community for their extraordinary and sustained
contributions to the progress of medicine and the improvement of life;
and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Dr. L. Nelson Hopkins upon the occasion of his designation as recipient
of the Chancellor Charles P. Norton Medal by The State University of New
York at Buffalo, to be celebrated at its Jacobs School of Medicine and
Biomedical Sciences' Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 3, 2019; and

WHEREAS, The Chancellor Charles P. Norton Medal recognizes
outstanding scholarly or artistic achievements, humanitarian acts,
contributions of time or treasure, exemplary leadership or any other
major contribution to the development of the University at Buffalo and
the quality of life in its community; Dr. L. Nelson Hopkins is truly
deserving of this prestigious award; and

WHEREAS, L. Nelson Hopkins earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from
Rutgers University, and his Doctor of Medicine, cum laude, from Albany
Medical College in 1969; he completed his Internship in Surgery
Residency, Neurosurgery, University at Buffalo in 1975; Residency,
Neurology, University at Buffalo in 1971; and Internship, Surgery, Case
Western Reserve University in 1970; and

WHEREAS, Dr. L. Nelson Hopkins began his long and distinguished
career as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at the
University at Buffalo in 1975; after seven years, he assumed the role of
Clinical Associate Professor, and since 1979, has held the title of
Chief of Service, Department of Neurosurgery at Kaleida Health; and

WHEREAS, For the last 30 years, Dr. L. Nelson Hopkins has held
several positions at the University at Buffalo including Professor of
both Radiology and Neurosurgery; from 1989-2013, he served as Chairman
of the Department of Neurosurgery; and

WHEREAS, In addition to these esteemed roles, Dr. L. Nelson Hopkins
has been the Director of Neurosurgery at the Toshiba Stroke Research
Center since 1997, and Clinical Professor of Neurosurgery at the
University of Rochester, School of Medicine and Dentistry since 2007;
and

WHEREAS, Ranking seventh among the most published neurosurgical
departments in North America, Dr. L. Nelson Hopkins has established
University at Buffalo Neurosurgery as one of the most respected in the
world; he has pioneered endovascular neurosurgery and has trained a new

generation of neurosurgeon leaders skilled in catheter-based technology
for minimally invasive neurosurgery; and

WHEREAS, Active in national neurosurgery, Dr. L. Nelson Hopkins has
served as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Association
of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) and the Executive Committee of the
Stroke Council of the American Heart Association; he has also held the
title of Scientific and Annual Meeting Chairman for both the AANS and
Congress of Neurological Surgeons, and was the Chairman of the Joint
Section on Cerebrovascular Surgery and President of the American Academy
of Neurological Surgery; and

WHEREAS, Throughout his exceptional career, Dr. L. Nelson Hopkins
has been the principal investigator of several national clinical trials
testing catheter-based technologies for the treatment of neurovascular
diseases; he is a member of the editorial boards of NEUROSURGERY and
World Neurosurgery and the author of more than 300 publications centered
on the prevention and treatment of stroke; and

WHEREAS, This brilliant man is an advocate of cross-specialty and
multidisciplinary collaboration, and was instrumental in creating the
Toshiba Stroke & Vascular Research Center, the Jacobs Institute and
Gates Vascular Institute, where he serves in leadership positions; and

WHEREAS, A proponent of the global approach to revascularization for
the improvement of outcomes for patients with vascular disease, Dr. L.
Nelson Hopkins has served on the faculty of numerous symposiums
nationally and internationally, and each year, hosts multidisciplinary
seminars along with industry leaders focused on assessing and managing
complications associated with minimally invasive catheter-based
interventions; and

WHEREAS, For his steadfast and unremitting commitment to his
profession, Dr. L. Nelson Hopkins has been the recipient of numerous
awards and accolades; and

WHEREAS, As a leader in his profession, Dr. L. Nelson Hopkins has
proven himself to be a great asset to medicine and to the health and
welfare of the citizens of the State of New York; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. L. Nelson Hopkins upon the occasion of his designation as
recipient of the Chancellor Charles P. Norton Medal by The State
University of New York at Buffalo; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Dr. L. Nelson Hopkins.
