COMMENDING Seamus Carey, Ph.D. upon the occasion
of his installation as the ninth President of Iona
College in New Rochelle, New York, on July 1, 2019

WHEREAS, New York State's commitment to education is unparalleled;
its history and stature are secured by the superlative caliber of its
educational professionals and the students they inspire; and

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
those individuals of outstanding character and remarkable integrity who
enhance the quality of education of the young people of New York State;
and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Seamus
Carey, Ph.D. upon the occasion of his installation as the ninth
President of Iona College in New Rochelle, New York, to be celebrated at
a Ceremony on Monday, July 1, 2019; and

WHEREAS, A Bronx native and first-generation college student, Seamus
Carey earned a Ph.D. in Philosophy and Master of Arts from Fordham
University, and a bachelor's degree from Vassar College; he also
attended Harvard University's Management Development Program and the
Executive Leadership Academy sponsored by the Council of Independent
Colleges; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Seamus Carey began his long and distinguished career as
the Chairman of the philosophy department at Manhattan College where he
taught for nine years; he then served as the Dean of Arts and Sciences
at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut, for four years;
and

WHEREAS, Prior to his selection as the new President of Iona
College, Dr. Seamus Carey has held the title of President of
Transylvania University, a highly regarded liberal arts college in
Lexington, Kentucky, since 2014; and

WHEREAS, In this capacity, Dr. Seamus Carey transformed the campus,
successfully led the school's commitment to diversity and inclusion
efforts, and forged strong ties to the city's civic and business
communities; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Seamus Carey has also published three books, which have
focused on the intersection of philosophy, parenting, and family life;
and is a contributor to Huffington Post; and

WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Noreen, and their
three children, Caitriona, Anna, and James, all of whom have shown him
love and support and rejoice in his many achievements; and

WHEREAS, Educators like Dr. Seamus Carey provide a tremendous
service to the future of our State and Nation, inspiring generations of
young people in their educational journeys and ensuring their success in
their future years; and


WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the
efforts of those individuals who work to support our proud tradition of
public education by providing their skills and talents to our colleges;
now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Seamus Carey, Ph.D. upon the occasion of his installation as the
ninth President of Iona College in New Rochelle, New York, on July 1,
2019; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Seamus Carey, Ph.D.
