COMMENDING the Ethelbert B. Crawford Public
Library in Monticello, New York, upon the occasion
of its designation as a Literary Landmark by
American Library Association's United for Libraries
WHEREAS, Library programs provide the means for individuals to enter
a lifetime of learning while gaining cultural understanding and the
enhancement of global communication skills; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the quality and character of life in the communities across the great
State of New York is reflective of certain exemplary library
institutions whose purpose is dedicated to serving the community and the
needs of its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend the Ethelbert B. Crawford Public Library in Monticello, New
York, upon the occasion of its designation as a Literary Landmark by
American Library Association's United for Libraries, in conjunction with
the observance of National Children's Book Week held April 29, 2019,
through May 5, 2019; and
WHEREAS, In celebration of Children's Book Week, which marks its
100th anniversary this year, United for Libraries has designated
Literary Landmarks recognizing children's book authors; this initiative
was spearheaded by Rocco Staino, Director of the Empire State Center for
the Book, and was presented in partnership with the American Library
Association/Children's Book Council Joint Committee; and
WHEREAS, The Ethelbert B. Crawford Library has been designated a
Literary Landmark for its well-loved program, Vera's Story Garden; this
momentous occasion was held on Saturday, May 4, 2019; and
WHEREAS, Vera B. Williams is the acclaimed author of A Chair for my
Mother, which inspired the chair in Vera's Story Garden; she wrote
children's books which often featured diverse characters in urban
settings; and
WHEREAS, The Ethelbert B. Crawford Public Library has been an
invaluable resource for residents of the Village of Monticello for
numerous years; people come to the library to connect, discover and
learn through story times, book group, and various programs for all
ages; and
WHEREAS, A vital part of its community, this remarkable institution
has continually strived to provide outstanding service to a diverse
population of neighborhood residents; and
WHEREAS, The success of the Ethelbert B. Crawford Public Library is
in direct correlation to the efforts of its staff, whose involvement is,
and always has been, characterized by an impressive commitment, an
unbridled enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of excellence in
all endeavors on behalf of this institution and the community it serves;
and
WHEREAS, Under the luminous guidance of its Board of Trustees
President, Lynn Skolnick, the Ethelbert B. Crawford Public Library will
continue to help young people and adults to learn, think critically, and
create and share knowledge for many more years to come; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
institutions of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, it should be recognized and applauded by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Ethelbert B. Crawford Public Library in Monticello, New
York, upon the occasion of its designation as a Literary Landmark by
American Library Association's United for Libraries; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Lynn Skolnick, Board of Trustees President, Ethelbert B.
Crawford Public Library.
