COMMEMORATING the Grand Opening of the Center for
Design Thinking at Manhattanville College on
September 10, 2019
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend those institutions of true purpose and high achievement whose
exemplary programs and accomplishments clearly demonstrate an enduring
pursuit of excellence in higher education for the youth of this noble
Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the Grand Opening of the Center for Design Thinking at
Manhattanville College on September 10, 2019; and
WHEREAS, Manhattanville College is continually evolving to remain
competitive in offering a high-quality, liberal arts education that
prepares students for their future; and
WHEREAS, Design Thinking is one initiative that is key to its goal
of equipping students with the skills to be effective and collaborative
contributors in the global community; and
WHEREAS, Manhattanville College has started integrating Design
Thinking principles into its curricula; and
WHEREAS, Design Thinking takes a human-centered, design-based
approach to help organizations innovate and grow; it urges examination
of complex problems from multiple angles and encourages prototyping and
testing to evaluate how well a solution meets the needs of the end-user;
and
WHEREAS, The goal of Manhattanville College's Design Thinking
program is to train all students, regardless of their professional
direction, in using the techniques of cross-disciplinary collaboration,
empathy and observation for any occupation; and
WHEREAS, A key component is for students to learn that they can
"successfully fail" as part of the process in problem-solving; and
WHEREAS, Manhattanville College's Center for Design Thinking will be
located in what is currently the President's Cottage, a c. 1860
structure on the Purchase campus behind Reid Castle; and
WHEREAS, Fully renovated under the direction of Spillman Farmer
Architects, the 7,850 square foot two-story space will be home to four
classrooms, one fabrication lab, a director's office, a kitchen and
dining area, and a lounge; and
WHEREAS, Steeped in a proud and distinguished history,
Manhattanville College may look back with pride upon its humble
beginnings, find just satisfaction in its purposeful growth and hold
true of purpose in its commitment to serving the educational needs of
its students; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the Grand Opening of the Center for Design Thinking at
Manhattanville College on September 10, 2019; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Center for Design Thinking at Manhattanville College.
