COMMEMORATING the 90th Anniversary of the
Huntington Public Library, Station Branch on
November 3, 2019

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the quality and character of life in the communities across the great
State of New York is reflective of certain exemplary institutions whose
purpose is dedicated to serving the community and the needs of its
citizenry; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 90th Anniversary of the Huntington Public Library,
Station Branch to be celebrated at an event on Sunday, November 3, 2019;
and

WHEREAS, In August of 1929, the Huntington Library Association voted
to establish a public library, and the Reverend Theodore Lyman Frost was
elected Assistant Librarian to begin work at the Station Branch on
October 1, 1929; and

WHEREAS, On Saturday, December 8, 1929, the Huntington Public
Library, Station Branch, located at 1351 New York Avenue, in the West
Wilton Wood building, opened its doors to the public for the first time
to register and tour the new facility; the following Monday, December
10, 1929, the library had 1,000 books available for the many children
who wanted to read them; and

WHEREAS, The Huntington Public Library, Station Branch building's
main floor was 30 x 60 feet, and was rented for $125 per month and $100
per month during the summer; it was the first public library to serve
not only the Huntington and Huntington Station communities, but also the
surrounding town of South Huntington; with a $2 per year charge,
nonresidents of its district were to be able to borrow books; and

WHEREAS, Throughout its history, the Huntington Public Library,
Station Branch has served hundreds of thousands of people, from all
backgrounds, all ethnicities, with materials and resources only a public
library could provide; today, the library is a vibrant community center
serving the young and old alike, just as it had done 90 years ago; and

WHEREAS, Steeped in a proud and distinguished history, the
Huntington Public Library, Station Branch may take just pride in its
purposeful growth, as it looks forward to continuing to serve the
educational, cultural and intellectual needs of the community; now,
therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 90th Anniversary of the Huntington Public Library,
Station Branch; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Huntington Public Library, Station Branch.
