MOURNING the tragic and untimely death of
15-year-old Madelyn C. Shaw of Binghamton, New York
WHEREAS, It is with feelings of deepest regret that this Legislative
Body records the passing of Madelyn C. Shaw, an extraordinary young
woman of indomitable faith and dedication whose short, yet purposeful
life will long serve as a standard to which others might aspire; and
WHEREAS, Madelyn Carey Shaw, affectionately known as Maddie, died on
Sunday, November 10, 2019; and
WHEREAS, Born on November 2, 2004, to Amy and Kevin Shaw, Maddie
Shaw was a sophomore at Binghamton High School; and
WHEREAS, Maddie Shaw's battle with Ewing Sarcoma, a rare form of
bone cancer, began in December of 2013, when doctors discovered a tumor
in her lung and traced the cancer's origin to her left hip; this
astonishing young lady fought several bouts of the disease and was six
months cancer-free when a fifth relapse was discovered; and
WHEREAS, In May of 2018, Maddie Shaw appeared on a billboard in
Times Square in New York City as one of the thousands honored by the
Great Cycling Challenge, an event which raises funds in support of
childhood cancer research; and
WHEREAS, A no-nonsense spitfire, Maddie Shaw courageously battled
cancer for six years, never wavering throughout her exhausting fight;
she will always be known as the standout in her family, not only for her
unique and inspiring personality, but also for her gorgeous blonde hair
and green eyes; and
WHEREAS, Wise beyond her 15 years on this earth, Maddie Shaw truly
inspired the lives of countless others with her hope, love and bravery;
taken from this earth too soon, her legacy will live on forever in her
family, friends, and the hundreds within her community who adored and
admired her tenacity and strength; and
WHEREAS, In addition to her parents, Maddie Shaw is survived by a
sister, Alexis; grandparents, Donna and Bill; aunts and uncles, Ashley
(godmother), Pete, Debbie, Steve, Mary, Karen and Todd; godfather,
Wayne; great aunt, Cindy; five cousins, Carey, Josh, Jaden, Siena and
Clara; and her best friend since birth, Ryan; as well as her dog Mocha
and hedgehog Quilbert; she was predeceased by her paternal grandparents,
Don and Dee Shaw; and
WHEREAS, Maddie Shaw brought so much joy to those around her and,
throughout her young life, made such a positive impact; her memory will
remain in the hearts of all those who had the honor of knowing her; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the tragic and untimely death of 15-year-old Madelyn C. Shaw of
Binghamton, New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Madelyn C. Shaw.
