COMMENDING Janie Lozano and Hunter Javeline in
recognition of their heroic actions in evacuating
students from a burning school bus

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend the caring, concern and heroic acts of individuals who take
prompt and appropriate action in emergency situations, remaining calm
under pressure, in an effort to preserve the lives of others; and

WHEREAS, The quality and sanctity of human life are cherished
values, worthy of safeguarding; this Legislative Body is proud to honor
individuals who would serve to protect it, lauding particularly those
who would clearly endanger their own lives and safety on behalf of that
cause; and

WHEREAS, On Wednesday, January 29, 2020, at approximately 9 a.m., a
fire broke out on bus route 10 while it was on its way to drop students
off at Signal Hill Elementary School on Melrose Road in Dix Hills, New
York; and

WHEREAS, Bus driver Janie Lozano immediately pulled over to the side
of the road, and while waiting for emergency personnel, first
responders, and district administrators, she instinctually began
evacuating the students from the vehicle; and

WHEREAS, Fortunately, all of the students stayed calm and quiet, and
listened to her instructions; one brave student in particular, fifth
grader Hunter Javeline, helped keep the students together during the
emergency evacuation, reassuring Janie Lozano that he had them; and

WHEREAS, Janie Lozano and Hunter Javeline should be meritoriously
commended for remaining calm under pressure and for showing valor and
true courage while performing a lifesaving deed; and

WHEREAS, Through their spontaneous and heroic actions, Janie Lozano
and Hunter Javeline demonstrated their character and their compassion
for the welfare of others, personifying, by virtue of their actions, the
collective concern of ordinary citizens across the community of New York
State who voluntarily respond without the thought of danger or reward
when others are in need of help; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Janie Lozano and Hunter Javeline in recognition of their heroic
actions in evacuating students from a burning school bus; and be it
further

RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Janie Lozano and Hunter Javeline.
