Senate Resolution No. 2796

BY: Senator PARKER

COMMEMORATING the 15th Anniversary Celebration of
Flanbwayan Haitian Literacy Project to be celebrated
on September 17, 2020

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the quality and character of life in the communities across New York
State are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those
organizations and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare
of the community and its citizenry; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 15th Anniversary Celebration of Flanbwayan Haitian
Literacy Project to be celebrated on Thursday, September 17, 2020; and

WHEREAS, Founded in 2005, Flanbwayan Haitian Literacy Project has
assisted hundreds of Haitian newcomer youth in New York City public high
schools, ensuring Haitian children ages 14-21 years old are
appropriately placed in high schools which support their ability to
remain in school and graduate; and

WHEREAS, This vital organization holds out of school time programs
to help develop these students into becoming productive citizens through
youth and leadership development activities which build their
self-esteem and nurture their voices; and

WHEREAS, A true asset to its community, Flanbwayan Haitian Literacy
Project helps to solve many problems for older students enrolled in
school, who often struggle to complete their educations; due to complex
responsibilities, obligations and lacking the traditional supports
necessary to meet their educational goals; and

WHEREAS, Offering alternative paths to graduation, Flanbwayan
Haitian Literacy Project offers older immigrant students' creative
responses to the challenges they face in their education, as well as
emotional and social lives; and

WHEREAS, While college is an admirable and possible goal for many
students, older immigrant and newcomer students need additional options
such as vocational training, programs that provide college credits, and
GED exams in languages other than English; and

WHEREAS, Flanbwayan Haitian Literacy Project partners with NYC
public schools to meet the learning needs of older newcomer students by
training educators who are culturally aware and fighting for more
transfer schools, evening classes, shorter school days, and classes
tailored to English Language learners; and

WHEREAS, Remaining true to its mission, Flanbwayan Haitian Literacy
Project's ongoing endeavors and notable achievements have significantly
contributed to bettering the quality of life in its community; now,
therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 15th Anniversary of Flanbwayan Haitian Literacy Project;
and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Flanbwayan Haitian Literacy Project.
