MOURNING the death of Heriberto Capote,
distinguished citizen and devoted member of his
community

WHEREAS, It is with profound sorrow that this Legislative Body,
representing the people of the State of New York, is moved this day to
pay tribute to an eminent man of indomitable faith and dedication whose
public service and countless accomplishments will forever stand as a
paradigm and inspiration for others; and

WHEREAS, Heriberto Capote was born in Havana, Cuba, on March 16,
1958, to Alberto and Oslaida Virginia Capote; in December of 1971, his
family left Cuba for the United States, briefly living in Miami before
settling in Washington Heights, New York; and

WHEREAS, As a student at George Washington High School, Heriberto
Capote excelled at football and baseball, and became known for his Latin
Hustle and Salsa style dance moves; and

WHEREAS, In 1979, Heriberto Capote began his illustrious career with
Mount Sinai Hospital in a janitorial position; he climbed the ranks to
serve in various managerial posts, the last of which was Manager of the
Environmental Services Department, the esteemed position from which he
retired in August of 2018, after 40 years of distinguished service; and

WHEREAS, Heriberto Capote rendered faithful, conscientious and
valuable service to Mount Sinai Hospital, earning the admiration, esteem
and affection of his colleagues; and

WHEREAS, In 1980, Heriberto Capote met the woman who would become
his wife at Club Ochentas where they had their first dance; the couple,
who was soon dancing all over town, were united in marriage in 1986; and

WHEREAS, With a steadfast and unwavering commitment to his
community, Heriberto Capote, alongside his wife, provided security
services for special events and programs at the Caribbean Cultural
Center African Diaspora Institute; and

WHEREAS, An avid sports fan, Heriberto Capote loved the New York
Mets and the New York Giants; in addition, he enjoyed playing baseball
with the Catholic and Central Park leagues, often traveling to the
Caribbean to compete; and

WHEREAS, A kind, caring and dependable man, Heriberto Capote's
presence was truly larger than life; a dedicated husband, father and
friend, he will truly be missed by all those who were lucky enough to
have known him; and

WHEREAS, Predeceased by his son, Eddie, Heriberto Capote is survived
by his loving wife, Melody; his three children, Jovan, Kai and Erienne;
a son-in-law, Anson; two grandchildren, Isabella and Julien; two
siblings, Alberto and Iris; and brother/sister-in-law, Chino and Norma;
as well as countless family members and friends; and


WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Heriberto Capote leaves behind a legacy which will long
endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all
he served and befriended; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Heriberto Capote, distinguished citizen and devoted
member of his community; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Heriberto Capote.
