MOURNING the death of Tommie Allen, renowned
coach, popular DJ, and devoted member of his
community

WHEREAS, It is with feelings of deepest regret that this Legislative
Body records the passing of Tommie Allen, a renowned coach, popular DJ,
and devoted member of his community, whose purposeful life will long
serve as a standard to which others might aspire; and

WHEREAS, Tommie Allen of Brooklyn, New York, died on Sunday,
February 9, 2020, at the age of 57; and

WHEREAS, In 1989, Tommie Allen began his illustrious career at
Canarsie High School, working in the school's basketball program for 22
years until the school shut its doors in 2011; and

WHEREAS, A longtime Canarsie High School basketball coach, Tommie
Allen was a beloved leader whose disciples remember him as a mentor who
drove them to mastery and excellence both on the hard court and in life;
and

WHEREAS, Tommie Allen's coaching and support was instrumental to the
success of countless students; during his long tenure, he worked to
shape young men both on and off the court, forging strong, personal
relationships with his athletes; and

WHEREAS, A true asset to his community, Tommie Allen further
involved himself in youth programs throughout the city, including
coaching basketball at the Eagle Academy and volunteering for basketball
programs in Harlem; and

WHEREAS, In addition to coaching, this extraordinary man earned a
reputation within the Tristate Area as a popular DJ, working private
events and mixing on the New York City radio stations Hot 97 and WBLS;
and

WHEREAS, Having distinguished himself in his profession and by his
sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the welfare of his
community, Tommie Allen's commitment to excellence, and his spirit of
humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, including
charitable and civic endeavors; and

WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Tommie Allen leaves behind a legacy which will long endure
the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all he
served and befriended; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Tommie Allen, renowned coach, popular DJ, and devoted
member of his community; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Tommie Allen.
