COMMENDING Emmanuel Baptist Church upon the
occasion of hosting its 5th Annual "EBC Honors:
Coming to EBC" on February 28, 2020

WHEREAS, Religious institutions, and the many spiritual, social and
educational benefits they confer, play a vital role in the development
of the moral fabric of a responsible citizenry; and

WHEREAS, Throughout the storied history of New York State, there
have emerged among these noble institutions, certain houses of worship
which have become distinguished through their spiritual leadership and
commitment to community service, and therefore warrant special
recognition; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Emmanuel
Baptist Church upon the occasion of hosting its 5th Annual "EBC Honors:
Coming to EBC" on Friday, February 28, 2020, in Brooklyn, New York; and

WHEREAS, A Black History Month Salute to community change-makers,
EBC Honors is among an array of arts, worship, and community action
programs, which include projects to aid juvenile offenders; an HIV
ministry funded by the National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS;
community-building/rebuilding efforts stretching from New York City to
Haiti to South Africa and points beyond; a quarterly jazz vespers
featuring locally and globally renowned singers and instrumentalists;
the Chosen Women's Ministry; Frontliners Men's Ministry; Prime Time
Ministry, 20/30 Something Ministry; and other endeavors; and

WHEREAS, Located on Lafayette Avenue in Brooklyn, New York, Emmanuel
Baptist Church remains steadfast and true to its mission to connect the
4,000 members of its congregation to Jesus Christ; and

WHEREAS, Emmanuel Baptist Church was established on April 25, 1884,
when 180 men and women who had obtained letters of dismissal from the
Washington Avenue Baptist Church, together with several from other
churches, met at the Adelphi Academy and united in the organization of
Emmanuel Baptist Church in Brooklyn; and

WHEREAS, Emmanuel Baptist Church in Brooklyn was duly recognized by
the unanimous vote of a council composed of representatives from sister
Baptist churches on October 6, 1881; the church was admitted into the
Long Island Baptist Association on October 19, 1881; and

WHEREAS, In November of 1990, a dynamic young minister preached at
Emmanuel; after hearing The Reverend Anthony L Trufant's sermon, the
membership of Emmanuel was convinced they found the right person, and
Reverend Trufant, who is the current Pastor, was extended the
opportunity to lead Emmanuel; and

WHEREAS, Under the able leadership of its Senior Pastor, Reverend
Anthony L. Trufant, Emmanuel Baptist Church stands on the threshold of
tomorrow, prepared to meet the challenges of the coming decades while
retaining that spiritual resolve which characterizes its past; and


WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to take note of
enduring religious institutions and to bring such institutions to the
attention of the people of this Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Emmanuel Baptist Church upon the occasion of hosting its 5th
Annual EBC Honors: Coming To EBC on February 28, 2020; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to The Reverend Anthony L. Trufant, Emmanuel Baptist Church,
Brooklyn, New York.
