MOURNING the death of Francis Joseph Angeline,
renowned coach, distinguished citizen and devoted
member of his community
WHEREAS, It is with feelings of deepest regret that this Legislative
Body records the passing of Francis Joseph Angeline, an extraordinary
man of indomitable faith and dedication whose purposeful life will long
serve as a standard to which others might aspire; and
WHEREAS, Francis Joseph Angeline of Endicott, New York, died on
Friday, July 6, 2018, at the age of 83; and
WHEREAS, Francis Joseph Angeline attended Union-Endicott High School
where he was captain of the football team during his senior season in
1951, as well as tight end and defensive end; he proceeded to Colgate
University, serving as Red Raiders captain and a member of the program's
coaching staff while he earned his master's degree; and
WHEREAS, Affectionately known as Fran, Francis Joseph Angeline began
coaching at Johnson City High School in 1957, at the age of 22, the
youngest chosen for such a position in the Triple Cities; he held this
position for three seasons, during which time he achieved a coaching
record of 12-10-2; and
WHEREAS, Francis Joseph Angeline began his legendary career at his
alma mater in 1960, as a Latin teacher and Head Coach of Union-Endicott
High School's football team; and
WHEREAS, A stickler who paid painstaking attention to ostensibly
minute detail, Francis Joseph Angeline was a disciplinarian and
stringent taskmaster; he was also a fair, caring and influential
paternal figure to many members of his extended Union-Endicott family;
and
WHEREAS, Francis Joseph Angeline, or simply "Coach" to multitudes
who donned the orange and black, closed two unbeaten seasons atop New
York State Sports Writers Association rankings throughout his
illustrious tenure; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, the 1979 Tigers are to this day considered the
best, outscoring opponents 413-26, and allowing an unimaginable 1,108
yards in nine games; the 1989 team went 11-0 and averaged 42 points per
game; and
WHEREAS, Francis Joseph Angeline built up the football program by
building up boys to men, through discipline, respect, dignity and the
unwavering belief that every young man deserves a shot, regardless of
size or talent, at being the best he can be on and off the field; and
WHEREAS, This extraordinary man retired in 1992, with a coaching
record of 216-88-7, after 32 years of dedicated service to
Union-Endicott High School; and
WHEREAS, Far more than a coach and athlete, Francis Joseph Angeline
had a love of the arts; he played the violin and piano as a child, and
every Christmas he arranged for his Latin and German classes to sing
carols at local hospitals and nursing homes; and
WHEREAS, A true asset to society, Francis Joseph Angeline
participated in his community through sports, music, mentorship,
teaching, authoring a book, volunteering for the Special Olympics and
reading to the visually impaired; and
WHEREAS, Predeceased by his beloved wife of 57 years, Patricia, his
parents Leandra and Frank, as well as his mother-in-law and
father-in-law, Grace and Loftus Hanley, Francis Joseph Angeline is
survived by his three children, Christopher (Kathleen), Laurence and
Vaun; and seven grandchildren, Ryley, Cary, Jessica, Andre, Anton, Chloe
and Chelsea; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Francis Joseph Angeline leaves behind a legacy which will
long endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory
to all he served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Francis Joseph Angeline, renowned coach,
distinguished citizen and devoted member of his community; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Francis Joseph Angeline.
