HONORING LuAnn Cherry upon the occasion of her
designation as recipient of the Annual American
Labor Studies Award by the American Labor Studies
Center

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve
the best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration
and cannot be sufficiently extolled; and

WHEREAS, LuAnn Cherry has given not only of her time and energies
but also of her competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently
has been designated for special honor; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor LuAnn Cherry
upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the Annual American
Labor Studies Award by the American Labor Studies Center to be
celebrated on Friday, December 4, 2020; and

WHEREAS, The American Labor Studies Center (ALSC) is a
not-for-profit organization whose mission is to promote the teaching of
the American labor movement and its history in the nation's elementary
and secondary schools, including such areas as its history,
organizations, activities, and unions; and

WHEREAS, A native of Butler, Pennsylvania, LuAnn Cherry is a retired
special education teacher; she spent 37 years with special needs
children in public education, retiring in 2012; and

WHEREAS, LuAnn Cherry completed her four-year degree in Elementary
Education and Special Education in three years at Slippery Rock
University; and

WHEREAS, With a passion for Genealogy, LuAnn Cherry is currently
seeking a Master's degree in Genealogy, Heraldry, and Paleographics at
the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland; and

WHEREAS, Always aspiring to learn more about her family, LuAnn
Cherry researched and wrote two family history books, one for her
maternal line and one for her paternal line, tracing her roots back to
the Mayflower; and

WHEREAS, Upon meeting historical reenactors at a colonial craft
show, LuAnn and her husband joined a French and Indian War reenactment
group in 1989, and made a life changing commitment; soon after, they
joined a Revolutionary War reenactment group, traveling to such sites as
Williamsburg, Virginia, Fort Niagara, New York, and Fortress of
Louisbourg, Nova Scotia, to portray life in the 18th century; not only
did she and her husband fall in love with this pastime but their two
sons did as well; today, their daughter in laws and three granddaughters
also reenact whenever possible; and

WHEREAS, Furthermore, this fascinating woman researches almost every
day looking for new and interesting family information; she is

researching and writing a book about her great-great-grandfather and his
surname change in the British Isles; when she is not researching at
home, she is traveling to places the family lived, such as Northern
Ireland and Italy; and

WHEREAS, When not travelling or researching, LuAnn Cherry can be
found in her garden and kitchen; she loves to grow vegetables and herbs,
cook and spend time with her three granddaughters; family is the most
important thing in her life; and

WHEREAS, A proud member of the Daughter of the American Revolution,
LuAnn Cherry has been called upon to contribute her time and talents to
countless civic and charitable endeavors and has always given of herself
unstintingly; and

WHEREAS, With her throughout have been her husband, their two sons,
and their spouses, as well as their three granddaughters, all of whom
feel privileged to be a part of her life and rejoice in her
achievements; and

WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an
individual for the benefit of others which LuAnn Cherry has displayed
throughout her life; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor LuAnn Cherry upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of
the Annual American Labor Studies Award; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to LuAnn Cherry.
