HONORING Luke Altman upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of the 2019 President's
Volunteer Service Award on March 23, 2019
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
pay tribute to those young people within the great Empire State who have
made strong contributions to their communities and who serve as role
models for their peers; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Luke Altman upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the
2019 President's Volunteer Service Award, to be celebrated at
Mattituck-Laurel Library, Mattituck, New York, on Saturday, March 23,
2019; and
WHEREAS, This prestigious award, endorsed by the President of the
United States, recognizes individuals who make significant contributions
to their communities in the form of volunteer work; and
WHEREAS, Luke Altman is a sophomore at Mattituck High School who has
met the requirements to receive the bronze-level award in his age group,
which means that he completed 50 hours of community service within one
year; and
WHEREAS, His contributions included volunteer work at our library
and at two local animal shelters: Kent Animal Shelter in Calverton and
Southold Animal Shelter; he did this while juggling a very rigorous
schedule filled with extracurricular activities including varsity cross
country, varsity wrestling, and J.V. tennis; and
WHEREAS, He is also an active member of his school's engineering
club and is Vice President of Student Council; in addition, Luke will be
participating in the NYSSMA All-State solo competition and is a member
of division Ill SCMEA All-County Chorus; and
WHEREAS, Despite his busy schedule, Luke Altman has also held a job
working at a local restaurant and maintaining stellar grades,
consistently earning him a place on the high honor roll list; and
WHEREAS, Luke Altman hopes to pursue a career in engineering after
graduating high school; and
WHEREAS, Volunteerism is an essential element of all societies; it
provides a way in which the human values of community, caring and
serving can be sustained and strengthened; and
WHEREAS, Volunteerism promotes family and community solidarity; most
importantly, people who volunteer their time in civic and charitable
endeavors inspire others to the call of volunteerism; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
individuals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Luke Altman upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of
the 2019 President's Volunteer Service Award on March 23, 2019; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Luke Altman.
