HONORING Piper Altman upon the occasion of her
designation as recipient of the 2019 President's
Volunteer Service Award on March 23, 2019

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
pay tribute to those young people within the great Empire State who have
made strong contributions to their communities and who serve as role
models for their peers; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Piper Altman upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the
2019 President's Volunteer Service Award, to be celebrated at
Mattituck-Laurel Library, Mattituck, New York, on Saturday, March 23,
2019; and

WHEREAS, This prestigious award, endorsed by the President of the
United States, recognizes individuals who make significant contributions
to their communities in the form of volunteer work; and

WHEREAS, Piper Altman is an 8th grader at Mattituck High School who
has met the requirements to qualify for the gold-level award in her age
group, which means that she completed 100 hours of community service
within one year; and

WHEREAS, Her contributions include volunteer work at our library,
her school, and two animal shelters: Kent Animal Shelter in Calverton
and Southold Animal Shelter; she did this while consistently maintaining
high honor roll and taking a very active role in her school and
community; and

WHEREAS, Piper Altman plays tennis on the J.V. tennis team at her
school and is also on the Inspire Competition Dance team; she is a
member of the High School Art Olympics team and received the NYSATA art
portfolio perfect score award; and

WHEREAS, Piper Altman is a NYSSMA vocal and piano soloist and a
member of HMEA chorus; in addition to her active involvement at school,
she is a member of the Library Advisory Board at her local library and
has served as a Girl Scout cadet for nine years; and

WHEREAS, She has received both the Girl Scout Bronze and Silver
Awards; Piper hopes to attend Virginia Tech after graduating high
school; and

WHEREAS, Volunteerism is an essential element of all societies; it
provides a way in which the human values of community, caring and
serving can be sustained and strengthened; and

WHEREAS, Volunteerism promotes family and community solidarity; most
importantly, people who volunteer their time in civic and charitable
endeavors inspire others to the call of volunteerism; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
individuals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Piper Altman upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of
the 2019 President's Volunteer Service Award on March 23, 2019; and be
it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Piper Altman.
