MOURNING the untimely death of Caroline J. Latham,
Principal of St. Joseph High School, distinguished
citizen and devoted member of her community

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and

WHEREAS, Caroline J. Latham of Rockville Centre, New York, died
suddenly on February 26, 2019; and

WHEREAS, After attending high school at The Mary Louis Academy,
Caroline J. Latham received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Business
Administration from Bernard M. Baruch College of the City of New York,
and her Master of Science degree in Math Leadership from Bank Street
College of Education; and

WHEREAS, At the time of her death, Caroline J. Latham was the
Principal of St. Joseph High School; prior to this, since 2010, she
served as the Chairperson of the Mathematics Department for grades
kindergarten through 12th grade at the Convent of the Sacred Heart in
Manhattan, as well as the Chairperson of the Mathematics Department St.
Agnes Boy's School; and

WHEREAS, Caroline J. Latham also taught at the Hewitt School, The
American School in Japan, Bank Street College of Education, and Cornell
University; in 2016, she received the prestigious Blackboard Award from
the New York Family magazine which honors the finest educators and
schools from all sectors and grade levels; and

WHEREAS, A trailblazer in providing and promoting science,
technology, engineering, art, and math for all students, Caroline J.
Latham presented best practices for S.T.E.A.M. and led the initiative to
be the first high school in Brooklyn to develop and build a Fab Lab
Makerspace with a full curriculum that all students are required to
take; and

WHEREAS, Under Principal Latham's experienced leadership, St. Joseph
High School is the only school in New York City to offer a full year
course in Cyber Security through its partnership with New York
University - Computer Science for Cyber Security, a program at the New
York University Tandon School Engineering created for high-achieving
high school women; and

WHEREAS, Caroline J. Latham is survived by her husband, Christopher;
one son, Eric; three stepchildren, Elizabeth Ann (Nathan) Poleck DMD,
Rita and Christopher; three grandchildren, Luke, Matthew and Leonardo;
her mother, Denise Tear; and two sisters, Chjuang-John (Veronica) Tear
and Annette (Sal) Chiaravolloti; as well as many nieces and nephews; and

WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Caroline J. Latham leaves behind a legacy which will long

endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all
she served and befriended; she will be deeply missed and truly merits
the grateful tribute of this Legislative Body; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the untimely death of Caroline J. Latham, Principal of St. Joseph
High School, distinguished citizen and devoted member of her community,
and to offer its sincere condolences to her family; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Caroline J. Latham
