HONORING Shawn Mason upon the occasion of his
designation for special recognition by Kappa Alpha
Psi Fraternity, Inc., Brooklyn-Long Island Alumni
Chapter at its Leadership Conference on February 23,
2019

WHEREAS, The unity of our State and Nation is built upon the
compassion of individuals such as Shawn Mason who uphold the values of
community life and who, through their great actions, epitomize the best
of humanity; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Shawn Mason
upon the occasion of his designation for special recognition by Kappa
Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Brooklyn-Long Island Alumni Chapter at its
Leadership Conference on Saturday, February 23, 2019, at Brooklyn
College; and

WHEREAS, Energetic and multitalented, Shawn Mason began his
illustrious career educating children in 1997, after earning his degree
in Psychology from Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland; and

WHEREAS, As Lead Arts Counselor at the Super Kids Reading Camp in
Baltimore City, Shawn Mason saw the need for mentorship and rose to the
challenge; after educating young minds in Baltimore for two years, he
relocated to his home state of New York in 1999, to further his work in
the education field; and

WHEREAS, While working at P.S. 3, The Bedford Village School in
Brooklyn, New York, Shawn Mason developed the Kappa Club, a weekly
discussion group for young males in his school to discuss social issues
and their effects on young men; and

WHEREAS, What began as a club of only five children quickly grew to
40, during which time Shawn Mason enlisted the help of his fraternity,
Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., in an effort to reach out to more
youth; this partnership was instrumental in helping countless young men
become members of the Kappa League, the fraternity's national mentoring
program; and

WHEREAS, Shawn Mason has served as the Kappa League/Guide Right
Advisor for the Brooklyn-Long Island Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi
Fraternity, Inc. since 2010; his tireless devotion to this vital
organization is a testament to his strong belief: "You must be the
change you want to see in the world"; and

WHEREAS, With a steadfast and unwavering commitment to positively
impacting the educational, social, moral and spiritual lives of young
children, Shawn Mason has spent more than two decades building the
self-esteem of our nation's youth, nurturing the best in them and
allowing them to be successful; and

WHEREAS, A proud member of the Brooklyn-Long Island Alumni Chapter
of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Shawn Mason served as the Visionary

and Chairman for its 2018 and 2019 Kappa League Leadership Conference;
and

WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an
individual for the benefit of others which Shawn Mason has displayed
throughout his life; and

WHEREAS, It has always been the objective of this Legislative Body
to honor and support those individuals who have displayed their
commitment to the betterment of their communities, and it is the intent
of this Legislative Body to inscribe upon its records, this tribute to
Shawn Mason, that future generations may know and appreciate his
admirable character, his many benevolent deeds, and the respect and
esteem in which he is held by his peers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Shawn Mason upon the occasion of his designation for special
recognition by Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Brooklyn-Long Island
Alumni Chapter at its Leadership Conference on February 23, 2019; and be
it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Shawn Mason.
