COMMENDING the Cornell University Cooperative
Extension of New York City upon the occasion of
celebrating the 50th Anniversary of its Expanded
Food and Nutrition Education Program on April 29,
2019

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend those
illustrious organizations of the State of New York whose focus and
intent have made a substantial impact on the quality of life in their
communities; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend the Cornell University Cooperative Extension of New York City
upon the occasion of celebrating the 50th Anniversary of its Expanded
Food and Nutrition Education Program on Monday, April 29, 2019, at the
First Presbyterian Church, Queens, New York; and

WHEREAS, Since 1969, the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education
Program (EFNEP) has successfully addressed critical societal concerns by
employing paraprofessional staff and influencing nutrition and physical
activity behaviors of low-income families, particularly those with young
children; and

WHEREAS, Through EFNEP's Peer Education Model, paraprofessionals, or
peer educators, deliver a series of hands-on, interactive lessons to
program participants; these lessons are evidence-based and tailored to
meet the needs of the audience; and

WHEREAS, With a community-based, relationship-driven, hands-on
educational approach, EFNEP has directly impacted economic, obesity, and
food insecurity challenges that hinder the health and well-being of the
state and nation; and

WHEREAS, A program of the Cooperative Extension System, EFNEP
operates in every state, the District of Columbia, and the six United
States territories - American Samoa, Guam, Micronesia, Northern
Marianas, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands; and

WHEREAS, Furthermore, this vital program reaches over a half million
low-income families and low-income youth each year; and

WHEREAS, In New York City, the land grant university supports EFNEP
through the Cornell University Cooperative Extension - NYC programs
operating in all five boroughs; the success of this program is in direct
correlation to the efforts of its agency partners and volunteers, whose
involvement is, and always has been, characterized by an impressive
commitment, an unbridled enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of
excellence in all endeavors on behalf of the organization and the
community it serves; and

WHEREAS, Over its distinguished 100-year history, the Expanded Food
and Nutrition Education Program has demonstrated continuous service to
the residents and communities which it serves; and

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that when
individuals and organizations of such noble aims and accomplishments are
brought to our attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by
all the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Cornell University Cooperative Extension of New York City
upon the occasion of celebrating the 50th Anniversary of its Expanded
Food and Nutrition Education Program on April 29, 2019; and be it
further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Cornell University Cooperative Extension of New York
City.
