CONGRATULATING H. Carl McCall upon the occasion of
his retirement after 10 years of distinguished
service as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of The
State University of New York

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
honor those distinguished citizens of this great Empire State who have
devoted themselves to faithfully serving the best interests of their
community and the needs of its residents; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
congratulate H. Carl McCall upon the occasion of his retirement after 10
years of distinguished service as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of
The State University of New York, to be celebrated with a Gala Farewell
Reception on Thursday, June 27, 2019, at the Fashion Institute of
Technology, New York City; and

WHEREAS, H. Carl McCall began his illustrious career as a member of
the State University of New York Board of Trustees on October 22, 2007;
on October 17, 2011, he was appointed to serve as its Chairman, the
esteemed position from which he will retire; and

WHEREAS, As Comptroller of the State of New York from May of 1993 to
December of 2002, H. Carl McCall was responsible for governmental and
financial oversight as well as pension fund management of the
880,000-member State and Local Retirement Systems; and

WHEREAS, With a steadfast and tireless commitment to public service,
H. Carl McCall served three terms as a New York State Senator,
representing the upper Manhattan district of New York City; he also
served as an Ambassador to the United Nations, a Commissioner of the
Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, and as the Commissioner of
the New York State Division of Human Rights; and

WHEREAS, A passionate advocate for public education H. Carl McCall
served as President of the New York City Board of Education from 1991 to
1993, during which time he set policy for the largest school system in
the nation; and

WHEREAS, Furthermore, he served as Chairman of the Public Higher
Education Conference Board, a coalition of 14 member organizations which
support a strong and vibrant public higher education system in New York
State; and

WHEREAS, Active in the private sector, H. Carl McCall served as a
Vice President of Citibank and as Corporate Director of the New York
Stock Exchange, Tyco International, New Plan Realty Corporation and
Ariel Investment; and

WHEREAS, H. Carl McCall was educated at Dartmouth College, Andover
Newton Theological Seminary and the University of Edinburgh; he is also
the proud recipient of nine honorary degrees; and


WHEREAS, After a decade of extraordinary effective service as
Chairman of the Board of Trustees of The State University of New York,
and after serving the City of New York, the State of New York, and the
nation for more than 50 years in various leadership capacities, H. Carl
McCall has truly earned the admiration, esteem and affection of his
colleagues and all of those lucky enough to know him; and

WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the occurrence of such a compassionate
blending of strength, leadership, intellect, and commitment as that
demonstrated by H. Carl McCall over a lifetime of sacrifice and
dedication to others; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate H. Carl McCall upon the occasion of his retirement after 10
years of distinguished service as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of
The State University of New York; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to H. Carl McCall.
