COMMEMORATING the 100th Anniversary of the Village
of Bayville, New York

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate the distinguished histories of the communities which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Village of Bayville, New York,
to be celebrated with a myriad of events throughout the year beginning
with an Opening Reception on Saturday, March 30, 2019, at St. Gertrude's
Parish Center; and

WHEREAS, The village of Bayville is a small hamlet located on the
north shore of Nassau County, overlooking Long Island Sound; this
beautiful community boasts picturesque cliffs which stand above the
sound, panoramic water views of Connecticut, and sandy beaches for all
to enjoy; and

WHEREAS, The history of Bayville began in 1658, when, with the
permission of the Crown of England, the land was purchased from the
Matinecock Indian tribe by Daniel Whitehead, an Oyster Bay settler; a
few years later, the land was divided into lots and sold to be used as
pastures; in 1754, a road, now known as Bayville Avenue, was surveyed
from Beaver Swamp through Bayville to Centre Island, becoming the main
route through the area for many years; and

WHEREAS, Throughout the years, various industries thrived in
Bayville, among them shellfish harvesting, sand and gravel mining, and
asparagus farming; over a period of time, the Village became a summer
resort and playground for vacationers from the surrounding areas; and

WHEREAS, At the dawn of the 19th Century, Bayville was becoming a
popular summer community and resort destination; one popular attraction
located opposite Oak Neck Beach was a casino which housed a
roller-skating rink, dining room, and dance hall; and

WHEREAS, Residences included summer homes and beach cottages as well
as magnificent estates with beautiful rolling lawns and gardens; the
construction of these homes and mansions brought a wave of new faces,
including immigrants from Europe, tradesmen, and household help, which
significantly increased the local population; and

WHEREAS, Perhaps the most recognizable symbol of the village of
Bayville is the bridge that connects the east end of Bayville to Mill
Neck; over the years, there have been four bridges constructed or
renovated between Bayville and Mill Neck to ease the traffic flow and
provide direct access to the Oyster Bay area; since the bridge is the
first image of the Bayville peninsula seen by residents or travelers
returning from Oyster Bay, this icon remains a welcome sight for many as
they approach the area; and

WHEREAS, Ferry service from Bayville to New York City and Stamford,
Connecticut, was available to residents and tourists alike, and in 1917,
the Wenck Marine Corporation offered regular daily crossings from Ferry
Beach in Bayville to both Rye and Stamford; and

WHEREAS, The Bayville community provides a superb environment in
which to dwell and raise a family; today's residents are proud to boast
that they and their families live, play, and thrive in Bayville; and

WHEREAS, The residents of Bayville truly enjoy the best of both
worlds, the solitude of a relatively small village and the unsurpassed
excitement of one of the world's major cities; and

WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of
growth and change, the Village of Bayville continues its commitment to
enhancing the quality of life of its citizens, ensuring a positive
business, institutional and educational climate, and providing all
essential services; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Village of Bayville, New York,
recognizing the significance of the role it continues to play in the
life of the community of the State of New York; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Robert E. De Natale, Mayor, Village of Bayville, New
York.
