HONORING Gary Broadhurst upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of the 2018-2019
Junior/Community College Under Armour Athletics
Director of the Year Award by the National
Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics
WHEREAS, New York State's commitment to education is unparalleled;
its history and stature are secured by the superlative caliber of its
educational professionals and the student athletes they inspire; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to acknowledge
the distinguished careers of those outstanding educational leaders,
whose dedication and achievements have been instrumental in developing
character and athletic excellence in the young people of New York State;
and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Gary Broadhurst upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the
2018-2019 Junior/Community College Under Armour Athletics Director of
the Year Award by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of
Athletics to be celebrated at its Annual Convention in Orlando, Florida;
and
WHEREAS, This prestigious award recognizes the efforts of athletic
directors for their commitment and administrative excellence within a
campus and/or college community environment over the last year; Gary
Broadhurst is one such individual; and
WHEREAS, In addition to this monumental commendation, Gary
Broadhurst has been named to the newly formed National Junior College
Athletic Association (NJCAA) Foundation Board of Directors; he is the
only sitting athletic director selected to serve on the board; and
WHEREAS, Gary Broadhurst began his long and distinguished career
with Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC) in 1979, as a Technical
Assistant; he was promoted to the faculty ranks in 1988, before his
appointment as Director of Athletics in 1996; throughout his tenure, he
has served as Head Coach of men's and women's basketball, men's and
women's bowling, softball, and golf programs; and
WHEREAS, Today, in his 40th year at MVCC, Gary Broadhurst directs
one of the most extensive, diverse, and successful two-year
intercollegiate athletic programs in the country; through his wisdom and
guidance, the Hawks have captured 24 NJCAA National Championships while
finishing second an additional 18 times, 68 Region III Championships
with 58 runner-up finishes, and 124 Mountain Valley Conference Titles;
and
WHEREAS, Under Gary Broadhurst's leadership, MVCC student athletes
have been selected as NJCAA All-Americans 448 times, 1,149 have been
recognized as All-Region, and an astounding 160 have captured individual
NJCAA National Championships; furthermore, six student athletes have
been selected as National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic
Administrators (NATYCAA) Scholar Athletes of the Year, more than any
other institution in the nation, and 34 have been chosen as the SUNY
Chancellor's Scholar Athlete of the Year; and
WHEREAS, In addition to his work at MVCC, Gary Broadhurst represents
Region III on the NJCAA Board of Regents, and has served as the
Treasurer for the Mountain Valley Collegiate Conference since 1998; he
is also actively involved in many national professional organizations;
and
WHEREAS, For over 10 years, Gary Broadhurst held the titles of both
the Men's and Women's Regional Director and Chair of the region's
Executive Committee; he served as President of NATYCAA, and is the
current Treasurer of the organization; he has also been a member of the
Executive Committee of NACDA, the New York State SUNY Athletics
Oversight Committee, SUNY Chancellor's Award Selection Committee, and
the NJCAA Assessment and Excellence Strategic Planning Ad-Hoc Committee;
and
WHEREAS, For his steadfast and unremitting commitment to his
profession and his athletes, Gary Broadhurst has been the recipient of
numerous awards and accolades including the L. William Miller Award by
the NATYCAA, Athletics Director of the Year Awards in 2007, 2012, and
2016 by the NACDA, the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in
Professional Service, and the inaugural Athletic Director of the Year
Award by NJCAA Region III; and
WHEREAS, Gary Broadhurst's commitment to fostering the development
of student athletes, not only in their sports, but as scholars and
contributors to the community beyond Mohawk Valley Community College's
campus proves he is a role model for all; and
WHEREAS, Athletic directors like Gary Broadhurst provide a
tremendous service to the future of our state and nation, inspiring
generations of young people in their athletic journeys and ensuring
their success in their future years; and
WHEREAS, Gary Broadhurst has clearly had an enduring impact on the
youth of Mohawk Valley Community College, as well as on the
community-at-large, and accordingly merits recognition and applause for
his impressive dedication to others; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize the
efforts of those individuals who work to support our proud tradition of
college education by providing their skills and talents to our schools;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Gary Broadhurst upon the occasion of being named 2018-2019
Junior/Community College Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year by
the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Gary Broadhurst.
