COMMENDING Fleischmann's Yeast upon the occasion
of the 150th Anniversary of its founding on June 8,
2019

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to honor those
businesses within the State of New York which distinguish themselves
through outstanding professional behavior, corporate innovation, and
enduring commitment to the community; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Fleischmann's Yeast upon the occasion of the 150th Anniversary
of its founding; and

WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion will be observed with a myriad of
events beginning with a presentation and panel discussion entitled "The
Fleischmann's Family Influence on Industry, Culture and Baseball" on
Friday, June 7, 2019; throughout the weekend many other activities are
planned including a parade, live music, a vintage baseball game
featuring the Mountain Athletic Club, and a bake-off contest which will
crown first and second place winners in two categories: breads and
desserts; and

WHEREAS, Fleischmann's Yeast was introduced in 1868 by Austrian
brewer Charles Fleischmann and his brother Maximilian, changing the way
Americans bake; and

WHEREAS, After the great success of the yeast cake and their Vienna
Bread at the 1876 Exposition, Charles and Maximilian Fleischmann
established the legendary Vienna Model Bakery on Broadway in New York
City; Fleischmann's Yeast is now part of AB Mauri's portfolio of
products; and

WHEREAS, A 19th Century center of commerce and industry in the Town
of Middletown, New York, the Clovesville and Griffin Corners area
evolved into a summer haven for wealthy families, including the
Fleischmann family; and

WHEREAS, The Fleischmann family established a 160-acre hillside
compound of five mansions and a baseball park which they gave to the
community in 1913, when the village incorporated and adopted the family
name; and

WHEREAS, Today, only one of the family's original homes dating back
to the 1880s remains; the 5,000-square-foot property, now known as
Spillian, welcomes visitors from around the world and is a prime example
of a Catskill Mountains retreat; and

WHEREAS, Baking is part of the fabric of American history, and the
Village of Fleischmanns is proud to honor the family who started one of
the most iconic food brands; and

WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that this Legislative Body
acknowledges Fleischmann's Yeast's success, recognizes its contributions
to the local and State economies, and extends its highest commendation
to the corporation and its employees, fully confident that, in its
future, it will enjoy the same success which has so characterized its
past; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Fleischmann's Yeast upon the occasion of the 150th Anniversary
of its founding on June 8, 2019; and be it further

RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to AB Mauri North America, and Fred Woller, mayor, Village
of Fleischmanns.
