COMMEMORATING the 50th Anniversary of the 1969
World Champion "Miracle Mets"

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
exemplary teams whose notable feats add to the fabric of New York State
and inspire our citizenry; and

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to congratulate the
New York Mets upon the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the teams'
1969 World Championship season; and

WHEREAS, In the first seven seasons of the teams' history, the New
York Mets had never achieved a winning record or finished above ninth
place; and

WHEREAS, Under the steadfast leadership of manager Gil Hodges, the
1969 New York Mets accomplished one of the most dramatic turnarounds in
Major League Baseball history, winning 38 of their final 49 games to
surge past the Chicago Cubs and earn the National League East Division
title with 100 wins; and

WHEREAS, The New York Mets shocked the sports world by defeating the
dominant Baltimore Orioles in five games to win the World Series, and
the incredible upset earned the team the moniker "the Miracle Mets"; and

WHEREAS, The New York Mets' thrilling and improbable championship
victory was cause for pride and celebration in the borough of Queens and
throughout the State, and this legendary underdog team remains beloved
by multiple generations of baseball fans in New York; and

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize
exceptional athletes who distinguish themselves through outstanding
achievements and thereby represent this great Empire State with
exceptional pride and determination; and

WHEREAS, The 1969 New York Mets will be honored at a 50th
Anniversary celebration at Citi Field on June 29, 2019; and

WHEREAS, This auspicious occasion presents a unique opportunity for
this Legislative Body to pay tribute to the enduring contributions of
the 1969 New York Mets; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the 1969 World Champion "Miracle
Mets"; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the New York Mets organization.
