MOURNING the death of Raymond J. Bryden, family
man, distinguished citizen, and devoted member of
his community
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Raymond J. Bryden of Binghamton, New York, died on
Thursday, August 15, 2019, at the age of 75; and
WHEREAS, Raymond James Bryden, affectionately known as Jim to family
and friends, was born in 1944, in Rome, New York; and
WHEREAS, Raymond J. Bryden studied architecture at the University of
Michigan, where he met the love of his life, Sharon; after they married
in 1967, they moved to Binghamton where he would spend his life
dedicated to improving the city; and
WHEREAS, With a steadfast and unwavering commitment to his
community, Raymond J. Bryden was the founding member of Preservation
Association of the Southern Tier (PAST) and American Institute of
Architects of the Southern Tier (AIA), and developed the Architecture
Awareness Program used in many local schools; and
WHEREAS, Historic preservation was truly one of Raymond J. Bryden's
passions; one of his proudest achievements was saving the Lackawanna
Train Station, where his firm Bryden-Trozze was located; and
WHEREAS, Raymond J. Bryden also loved and always sought to preserve
nature; his sense of adventure led him and his wife on camping
excursions across the country; they especially enjoyed exploring the
national parks; in their much deserved retirement, they traveled the
world, visiting China, Australia, New Zealand, Peru and Europe; and
WHEREAS, Raymond J. Bryden is survived by his wife, Sharon; his two
sons, Gregory and Geoff (Jean); one granddaughter, Mia; one brother,
David; one sister, Gail Zegarelli; many nieces and nephews; and numerous
friends and colleagues, who will long cherish his memory; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Raymond J. Bryden leaves behind a legacy which will long
endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all
he served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Raymond J. Bryden, family man, distinguished citizen,
and devoted member of his community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Raymond J. Bryden.
