Assembly Resolution No. 745

COMMEMORATING the 100th Anniversary of the Corning
American Legion Auxiliary, John P. Eaton Post No.
746 on February 23, 2020

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the quality and character of life in the community's across New York
State are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those
patriotic organizations and individuals who devote themselves to the
welfare of the community and its citizenry; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Corning American Legion
Auxiliary, John P. Eaton Post No. 746, to be celebrated with a Buffet
Luncheon at the Post on Sunday, February 23, 2020; and

WHEREAS, The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919, as a
patriotic veterans organization; and

WHEREAS, Focusing on service to veterans, service members and
communities, the American Legion evolved from a group of World War I
veterans into one of the most influential nonprofit groups in the United
States; and

WHEREAS, Over the years, the American Legion has influenced
considerable social change in America, won hundreds of benefits for
veterans and produced many important programs for children and youth;
currently, membership stands at over 2.4 million in more than 14,000
posts worldwide; and

WHEREAS, In November 1919, a charter was granted to Post No. 746 of
Corning, New York, and given the name John Patchill Eaton, the first
Corning native killed in action near Chateau Thierry, France, in July
1918; and

WHEREAS, By 1924, the Corning American Legion assumed much of the
responsibility for the community's Memorial Day parade and ceremony;
later that year, the 86th and 161st Regiments of the Grand Army of the
Republic combined with Post 746; and

WHEREAS, Furthermore, in 1954, Post members organized and
participated in the John P. Eaton Drum and Bugle Corps, also known as
the Glassmen; and

WHEREAS, Since its inception, the Corning American Legion has grown
to become very active in community, athletic, and veterans' affairs; and

WHEREAS, The success of the Corning American Legion continues its
dedication to fostering the traditions of patriotism, excellence, and
commitment which have made our nation strong; it is the custom of this
Legislative Body to recognize the significance of their contributions
and to note their worthy endeavors which have earned the recognition and

applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore,
be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Corning American Legion
Auxiliary, John P. Eaton Post No. 746; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the Corning American Legion Auxiliary, John P. Eaton Post
No. 746.
