CELEBRATING the life and accomplishments of Mary
Bishop, proud Trinidadian, distinguished citizen and
devoted member of her community
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Mary Bishop of Brooklyn, New York, died on Sunday, May 9,
2021, at the age of 59; and
WHEREAS, A native of Trinidad and Tobago, Mary Bishop grew up in
Point Fortin; in 1994, she migrated to Brooklyn, New York, where she
attended Medgar Evers and John Jay Colleges; she earned her
Baccalaureate of Science degree with a double major in Psychology and
Criminal Justice graduating cum laude from City University of New York,
and her Master's degree in public administration with a concentration on
Prisoner's Reintegration; and
WHEREAS, Mary Bishop began her political career as an aide for then
Council Member Yvette Clarke; upon Ms. Clarke's elevation to Congress,
she was assigned to the position of Executive Assistant in the House of
Representatives in Washington D.C., a position she held for two years
before returning to the New York office; and
WHEREAS, As a result of her commitment and dedication to her
community and oath to service to her country, Mary Bishop received a
well-deserved promotion to Director of Constituent Services, focusing on
the Caribbean community, especially the women and children; and
WHEREAS, A woman of strong Catholic faith, Mary Bishop was a proud
mother, grandmother, loving friend, and compassionate community advocate
which is ultimately a testament to the greatness that results from
living a life of integrity, selflessness, and outstanding community
service; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Mary Bishop leaves behind a legacy which will long endure
the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all she
served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
celebrate the life and accomplishments of Mary Bishop, proud
Trinidadian, distinguished citizen and devoted member of her community;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Mary Bishop.
