MOURNING the death of Peter R. Weiss, noted
political organizer, family man, distinguished
citizen and devoted member of his community
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to pay proper
tribute to individuals of great character whose lives exemplify the
highest ideals of humanity; and
WHEREAS, With its deepest regret, this Legislative Body records the
passing of Peter R. Weiss on Monday, February 8, 2021, at the age of 74,
noting the loss of a citizen whose purposeful life and endeavors
contributed so much to elevating the quality of life in his community;
and
WHEREAS, At the time of his death, Peter R. Weiss was employed as a
staff member for Senator Kevin Parker; every resident from the 21st
Senate District certainly benefitted, in one way or another, from the
profound dedication and valued intelligence he brought to his work as a
political organizer; and
WHEREAS, Peter Richard Weiss was born to Mildred (Goldstein) and Dr.
Albert Harvey Weiss on March 17, 1946, in Brooklyn, New York; he was
raised in Midwood, Brooklyn, where he attended public school and then
Poly Prep High School; upon graduating from public high school, he
earned a degree from Long Island University, before attending Brooklyn
Law School; and
WHEREAS, After leaving law school, Peter R. Weiss clerked in a law
firm for three years; he then successfully passed the bar and was
admitted to practice law; realizing his true passion was public service,
he became an active part of the Brooklyn reform political movement; and
WHEREAS, Peter R. Weiss' focus was judicial reform and he worked
hard to change elections by encouraging women and people of color to
organize and empowered them by insisting the reform movement embrace
diversity not just with its words but with its candidates; and
WHEREAS, Peter R. Weiss was instrumental in the election of Mike
Pesce to the New York State Assembly in the 52nd A.D. and the success
of Joe Ferris in what was then the 51st A.D. (now the 44th); and
WHEREAS, During this time, Peter R. Weiss started a family and was
blessed with three children who he adored and would often take them with
him to political meetings; and
WHEREAS, When Peter R. Weiss was not working to make Brooklyn a
better place to live, work and play, he enjoyed good food and listening
to rock n' roll such as Lynyrd Skynyrd; above all, he loved to spend
time with his wonderful family, especially his grandchildren; he could
often be found at their various school and sporting events and truly had
a special relationship with each and every one of them; and
WHEREAS, Peter R. Weiss is survived by one daughter, Leila Anne; two
sons, David Alexander and Joshua Ari; and six cherished grandchildren,
Caroline Marie, Georgia Michele, James Anthony, Ethan Andrew, Juliet
Victoria and Emily Angelina, all of whom will never forget their beloved
pop pop, grandpa and poppy; and
WHEREAS, Peter R. Weiss lived a beautiful life full of passion, love
and commitment; his infinite selflessness and benevolence will shine on
through his family's vivid and happy memories; his insight and strength
will forever serve as a beacon of love, light and hope to the countless
lives he touched; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Peter R. Weiss leaves behind a legacy which will long endure
the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all who
were privileged to have known and loved such an amazing gentleman; he
will be deeply missed and truly merits the grateful tribute of this
Legislative Body; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Peter R. Weiss, and to express its deepest
condolences to his family; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Peter R. Weiss.
