LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending R. Karl Rethemeyer
upon the occasion of his retirement after 18 years
of dedicated service to the University at Albany
WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body to take note of
and publicly acknowledge individuals of remarkable integrity and
character whose endeavors have enhanced the quality of education in this
great State; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend R. Karl
Rethemeyer upon the occasion of his retirement after 18 years of
dedicated service to the University at Albany; and
WHEREAS, R. Karl Rethemeyer earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from
the University of Pennsylvania, College of Arts and Sciences and his
Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from the Wharton School of
Business; in 1993, obtained his Master of Science degree in Development
Studies from the London School of Economics and Political Science; and
WHEREAS, Later, R. Karl Rethemeyer furthered his education by
earning his Ph.D. in Public Policy from Harvard University, John F.
Kennedy School of Government; and
WHEREAS, R. Karl Rethemeyer began his long and distinguished career
in education at the University at Albany in September of 2002 as an
Assistant Professor of Public Administration & Policy; in July of 2017,
he was promoted to Professor; and
WHEREAS, In June of 2003, R. Karl Rethemeyer began his
administrative duties as the Director of the Masters in Public
Administration Program; in September of 2005, he transitioned to the
role of Director of the Ph.D. in Public Administration and Policy
Program; and
WHEREAS, From September of 2009 through February of 2015, R. Karl
Rethemeyer served as Chair of the Department of Public Administration
and Policy; beginning in March of 2012, he was also the Associate Dean
of the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs & Policy; and
WHEREAS, R. Karl Rethemeyer then assumed the title of Interim Dean
for the college, and after almost three years of service, he became
Dean, the position from which he will officially retire on June 30,
2021; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his tenure, R. Karl Rethemeyer has been
published many times and has initiated an extensive list of
grant-supported projects; for his exceptional work, he was the recipient
of numerous awards and accolades including the 2005 Laverne Burchfield
Award for Best Book Review in Public Administration Review, Volume 64
and the 2009 Accenture Advances Award for Best Article in International
Public Management Journal, Volume 11; from August of 2006-July of 2007,
he was the Department of Homeland Security START Fellow and a 2008
Minnowbrook III Emerging Scholar Invitee; and
WHEREAS, A caring, competent and committed leader, R. Karl
Rethemeyer's character and integrity are the hallmarks of his life and
work as an educational leader, a community volunteer and as a person;
and
WHEREAS, The residents of Albany County are indeed fortunate and
blessed to have had such a dedicated and respected educational leader;
his wisdom and contributions to the University at Albany have truly made
a difference in the lives of those fortunate enough to have worked with
him; and
WHEREAS, A significant contributor to education in the State of New
York, R. Karl Rethemeyer has continually demonstrated an impressive
dedication, an unparalleled devotion and an unremitting enthusiasm for
the quality of the educational programs and opportunities offered for
the benefit of its faculty and students, as well as for the entire
community; and
WHEREAS, In completing his service as Dean, R. Karl Rethemeyer
leaves behind more than mere bricks and mortar; he leaves behind a
legacy to the students of the University at Albany and to the residents
of the Capital Region; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend R. Karl Rethemeyer upon the occasion of his retirement after 18
years of dedicated service to the University at Albany, and to wish him
continued success in all his future endeavors; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to R. Karl Rethemeyer.
