Senate Resolution No. 1334

MOURNING the death of Lloyd P. Walsh, well-known
broadcaster, distinguished citizen and devoted
member of his community

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
outstanding individuals who distinguished themselves through their
exceptional careers, attaining unprecedented success and the highest
level of personal achievement; and

WHEREAS, Lloyd P. Walsh, of Utica, New York, died at home on
Wednesday, December 8, 2021, at the age of 99; endowed with a naturally
genial disposition and a spirit of tireless optimism, he will be
remembered for his devotion to both his immediate family and his larger
community; and

WHEREAS, Lloyd P. Walsh was born on January 2, 1922, in Oswego, New
York, the son of Lloyd and Martha Balme Walsh; and

WHEREAS, He graduated from Oswego High School in 1939 and attended
Oswego State Teachers College; and

WHEREAS, During World War II, Lloyd P. Walsh proudly served in both
the Army Air Forces and the infantry where all his combat time was spent
as a front-line rifleman in the 35th Division, a part of General
Patton's 3rd Army; and

WHEREAS, Upon his return home from the war, Lloyd P. Walsh enrolled
in the Radio Workshop at Syracuse University; and

WHEREAS, He married his college sweetheart, the former June Wood;
the couple was happily married until her death in 1991; and

WHEREAS, Following Lloyd P. Walsh's graduation from Syracuse in
1948, he had a successful broadcasting career that ultimately spanned
more than four decades; he worked in all phases of radio in the Utica
area including programming, writing, administration, advertising sales,
and on-air work; and

WHEREAS, He was best known for his play-by-play broadcasts of area
high school and college basketball, and as the Saturday voice of Colgate
University football on radio station WRUN; and

WHEREAS, A member of the Utica Advertising Club and the Sales
Executives Club, Lloyd P. Walsh also served on the Development Council
at St. Elizabeth Hospital; worked as a Literacy Volunteer; and
advocated for the United Way; and

WHEREAS, Following his retirement, Lloyd P. Walsh continued to share
the skills he acquired as a broadcaster, by reading and recording books
for the Central Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired; he was
a long-time parishioner of Our Lady of Lourdes Church in South Utica;
and

WHEREAS, In 1993, Lloyd P. Walsh was inducted into the Greater Utica
Sports Hall of Fame, and he also served for several years on its Board
of Directors; furthermore, he was a member of the SUNY/IT Sports Hall of
Fame, and in 1988, was named "Man of the Year" by the East Utica
Optimist Club; and

WHEREAS, An avid golfer, bowler, excellent swimmer and a dedicated
runner, Lloyd P. Walsh could still be found on his treadmill each
morning following a disciplined fitness routine well into his nineties;
he was also an active member of the Skenandoa Golf Club; and

WHEREAS, Lloyd P. Walsh is survived by his six children, Kathleen
(Robert) Berry, Nancy Walsh Manes, Susan Walsh, Jeanne Walsh, David
Walsh, and Dr. Douglas Walsh; and his four grandchildren, Cara (Sean)
Manes, Gina Manes (Steven) Willard, Meaghan (Jesse) Foltz, and Greg
Walsh; as well as four great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Lloyd P. Walsh leaves behind a legacy which will long endure
the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all he
served and befriended; he will be deeply missed and truly merits the
grateful tribute of this Legislative Body; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Lloyd P. Walsh, and to express its deepest
condolences to his family; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Lloyd P. Walsh.
