COMMENDING Leo S. Ullman upon the occasion of his
designation for special recognition by the Jewish
Community Relations Council-Long Island, at its
Annual Holocaust Remembrance Day Commemoration on
May 5, 2022
WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of
certain extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their
valued contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commend Leo S. Ullman upon the occasion of his designation for special
recognition by the Jewish Community Relations Council-Long Island, at
its Annual Holocaust Remembrance Day Commemoration to be held via Zoom
on Thursday, May 5, 2022; and
WHEREAS, Holocaust Remembrance Day, known in Hebrew as Yom HaShoah,
is a day set aside for remembering the victims of the Holocaust and for
reminding New Yorkers, all Americans, and people around the world of
what can happen to civilized people when bigotry, hatred and
indifference reign; and
WHEREAS, Leo S. Ullman was born in Amsterdam, the Netherlands in
July of 1939; after surviving the horrors of World War II, he emigrated
to the United States with his family to start a new life in Port
Washington, New York, where he still resides; and
WHEREAS, After graduating from Harvard College and Columbia
University's Graduate Schools of Law and Business, Leo S. Ullman proudly
served his country as a member of the United States Marine Corps and
Marine Corps Reserves; and
WHEREAS, Leo S. Ullman practiced law for 30 years, and has formed
several successful real estate ownership and management companies; and
WHEREAS, In 2015, Leo S. Ullman detailed his harrowing experiences
during World War II in his book, 796 Days: Hiding as a Child in Occupied
Amsterdam During WWII and Then Coming to America, a mesmerizing
first-person story of a young Jewish boy hidden by complete strangers
for over two years, while his parents hid in an attic elsewhere, not
knowing where their son was or if he was alive; and
WHEREAS, The book also tells the stories of other family members and
their miraculous survival through unique photos, documents and
correspondence, as well as historical context; and
WHEREAS, In addition to his book, Leo S. Ullman has kept the Jewish
history alive by serving as the Director of the Anne Frank Center USA
for two decades and as Chairman for seven years, and Chairman of the
Foundation for the Jewish Historical Museum of Amsterdam; and
WHEREAS, Leo S. Ullman and his wife Kay co-sponsored the exhibit
"State of Deception: The Power of Nazi Propaganda" at the United States
National Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC, where he also
served as a member of the Development Committee; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an
individual for the benefits of others which Leo S. Ullman has displayed
throughout his life; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is proud to recognize Leo S. Ullman
for the courage and fortitude he has displayed throughout the years of
his life; with his tremendous pride for his heritage, and his ceaseless
work against hate and prejudice, he has benefited the world in
immeasurable ways; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Leo S. Ullman upon the occasion of his designation for special
recognition by the Jewish Community Relations Council-Long Island, at
its Annual Holocaust Remembrance Day Commemoration; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Leo S. Ullman.
