HONORING Jaime Alicea upon the occasion of his
retirement after many years of distinguished service
to the Syracuse City School District

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to acknowledge the
significant milestones in the distinguished careers of esteemed
residents of this noble Empire State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Jaime Alicea upon the occasion of his retirement after nearly 40 years
of distinguished service to the Syracuse City School District; and

WHEREAS, For nearly four decades, Jaime Alicea rendered faithful,
conscientious and valuable service to the Syracuse City School District,
earning the admiration, esteem and affection of his colleagues; and

WHEREAS, In his capacity as Superintendent, Jaime Alicea served with
loyalty, honor and distinction, and was governed by a keen sense of duty
and always showed a unique grasp of human problems in his official acts;
and

WHEREAS, Jaime Alicea joined the Syracuse City School District in
1983 as a teaching assistant; he went on to become a teacher, then was
Vice-Principal, Principal, Area Superintendent, Deputy Superintendent
for Supervision and Instruction, and Chief Operations Officer, before
taking on his final role as Superintendent, the esteemed position from
which he will officially retire; and

WHEREAS, In his role as Area Superintendent, Jaime Alicea notably
established a Principals' Advisory Committee, a parent advisory group, a
Pre-K-12 articulation, monthly staff development for administrators, and
more; and

WHEREAS, Committed to making a lasting impact, Jaime Alicea, in his
role as Chief Operations Officer, successfully led the implementation of
the Peer Assistance and Review program, facilitated a districtwide
Behavior Committee and Attendance Committee, established a Minority
Recruitment Committee, participated in the negotiations of ten
collective bargaining agreements and revised numerous Board policies;
and

WHEREAS, Truly caring about his community, Jaime Alicea previously
served on several local boards and committees, including the Onondaga
County Public Library Strategic Planning Committee, Youth Leadership
Greater Syracuse Founding Committee, New York State Education Department
Assessment Committee, and the New York State Reimagine Education
Committee; and

WHEREAS, Currently, he serves on the Gifford Foundation Board of
Directors, Blueprint 15, the Syracuse Surge Strategy, Onondaga County
Coalition to Prevent Gun Violence Steering Committee, and the Onondaga
Community College Board of Trustees; and


WHEREAS, Through his many years of dedicated service, Jaime Alicea
has been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades, including being
recognized as the Latino Educator of the Year by ANCLA, the Latino
Educator by Nosotros Radio and has received the NAACP Community Service
Award, and the YWCA Academy of Diversity Achievers Award; he was
recently recognized by Syracuse University with the Chancellor's
Citation for Public Education as an advocate and leader; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when
individuals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Jaime Alicea upon the occasion of his retirement after more than
39 years of distinguished service to the Syracuse City School District;
and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Jaime Alicea.
