COMMEMORATING the 75th Anniversary of Levittown,
New York

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and
commemorate the distinguished histories of the communities which
comprise the noble body of this great Empire State; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 75th Anniversary of Levittown, in Nassau County, New
York; and

WHEREAS, Levittown is a hamlet of the Town of Hempstead, New York,
located on Long Island, and was constructed between 1947 and 1951; it
was created as a place of peace and harmony for young veterans returning
home from war; and

WHEREAS, The builder, Levitt & Sons, constructed 17,447 units,
landscaping, pools, parks, and community facilities at unmatched rates
of speed and output; this mass-production, civil engineering, marketing,
labor, and the business management techniques used here were employed in
subsequent developments and came to be emulated throughout the globe;
and

WHEREAS, Levittown is considered to be the first suburb in the
United States and acted as a model for the spread of idyllic American
suburbia throughout the country; and

WHEREAS, Levittown still holds true to its early beginnings in the
1940s, setting the tone for the rest of suburban America, embracing the
values of civic responsibility and neighborliness; and

WHEREAS, Levittown residents give back to the community through
volunteering with traditional service clubs, such as the Kiwanis and
Lions; and

WHEREAS, With abundant opportunities for recreation, the original
nine community swimming pools have been enhanced with playgrounds and
sports fields, and families often attend block parties and join league
sports; and

WHEREAS, Levittown also holds events for the community, such as a
February Winterfest, a July 4th celebration, and Lazy Days of Summer in
July; and

WHEREAS, Levittown is steadfastly dedicated to providing local
troops with a sense of community and solidarity through its active
Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion posts; and

WHEREAS, The modern-day expansion of local commercial establishments
and small businesses provide all the necessities Levittown residents may
need; and

WHEREAS, Many of the original homeowners' children have grown up in
Levittown and raised their families there as well; it became a haven for
Americans to plant their roots and known as a place where generations of
families could live and thrive; residents have become attached to the
Levittown community and their neighbors; and

WHEREAS, Remaining fruitful over the ebb and flow of decades of
growth and change, the Hamlet of Levittown continues its commitment to
enhancing the quality of life of its citizens, ensuring a positive
business, institutional and educational climate, and providing all
essential services; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 75th Anniversary of Levittown, New York, recognizing the
significance of the role it continues to play in the life of the
communities of the State of New York; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Don Calvin, Town Supervisor of Hempstead.
