RECOGNIZING October 1, 2022, as International
Music Day
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body, in keeping with
its time-honored traditions, to recognize and pay tribute to those who
seek to preserve and celebrate the musical heritage of our State and
Nation; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to recognize October
1, 2022, as International Music Day; and
WHEREAS, In 1974, the International Music Council declared that
International Music Day would be celebrated on October 1st every year;
and
WHEREAS, Since its inception in 1949, the International Music
Council (IMC), an associate organization of UNESCO, strongly believed
music had the power to unite communities and foster world peace; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, the Council, especially its President in 1975,
Lord Yehudi Menuhin, firmly believed music could strengthen
relationships and bridge cultural gaps among communities; and
WHEREAS, Realizing this, the Council made the decision to devote one
day each year to music with the aim to harness the power of music to
unite communities and cultures and inspire them to coexist harmoniously;
and
WHEREAS, Lord Yehudi Menuhin, arguably America's most prolific
violinist and music conductor at that time, wrote a letter to the IMC
members proclaiming October 1st as International Music Day; and
WHEREAS, Remaining true to its original mission, International Music
Day encourages the promotion of musical art among all the sections of
society, motivates the application of UNESCO's ideals of peace and
friendship among people, creates space for the evolution of cultures
through the exchange of experiences, and encourages mutual appreciation
of cultures, especially their aesthetic values; and
WHEREAS, Since the first International Music Day on October 1, 1975,
over 150 countries across the globe have celebrated the power of music
to unite societies, communities, and people; and
WHEREAS, This vital day offers people an occasion to celebrate music
and contribute towards a more peaceful, joyful, and harmonious society;
events on this day include concerts, exhibitions, seminars on creating
music, lectures, music conferences, and more; and
WHEREAS, Events which provide a means of preserving a part of our
rich American past and which contribute to the community in such noble
endeavors as aforementioned, are held in the highest regard by this
Legislative Body; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
recognize October 1, 2022, as International Music Day; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the International Music Council.
