MOURNING the death of Thomas Smith, family man,
dedicated public servant and devoted member of his
community

WHEREAS, There are certain outstanding members of our community who,
through their selfless commitment and dedication, served to better the
quality of life in their community and had a measurable positive impact
on the lives of its residents; Thomas "Tom" Smith was one such
individual; and

WHEREAS, A native son of Buffalo, Thomas Smith passed away on
Thursday, August 4, 2022, at the age of 51; and

WHEREAS, Born in 1970, Thomas Smith was raised in the Schiller Park
neighborhood; after graduating from the former Turner-Carroll High
School in East Buffalo, he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in history
from State University of New York at Buffalo; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Smith began his long career in public service at the
young age of 19, when he served as a summer laborer with the Buffalo
Sewer Authority; shortly thereafter, he joined Team Buffalove and Mayor
Anthony Masiello's Mayor's Impact Team, where he truly made a difference
in the lives of his fellow Buffalonians; and

WHEREAS, Throughout his career, Thomas Smith held numerous
leadership positions in City government, including Quality of Life
Programs Manager and Director of Parks and Recreation; most recently, he
served as Chief of Staff/Secretary to the General Manager at the Buffalo
Sewer Authority; and

WHEREAS, Thomas Smith devoted his life to making his beloved
hometown of Buffalo a better place for its residents to live, work and
play; his outgoing personality and vast knowledge made him the "go to"
man for anything City-related; and

WHEREAS, Above all, Thomas Smith enjoyed spending time with his
treasured family; he is survived by his beloved wife of 12 years, the
former Jessica Maglietto; two sons, Jack and Drew; his parents, Dennis
and Shirley Smith; and two brothers, Dennis (Denise) and Doug; as well
as numerous other relatives, friends and colleagues who will long
cherish his memory; and

WHEREAS, A man of great compassion and determination, Thomas Smith's
legacy extends far beyond his accomplishments as a successful public
servant; his sincere concern for others; his integrity, unconditional
friendship and selfless motivation to give of himself, will long stand
as a beacon for those who would aspire to service in their community;
now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Thomas Smith, and to express its deepest condolences
to his family; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Thomas Smith.
