HONORING New York State Police Sergeant Jason
Cawley in recognition of his prompt and heroic
actions in saving the life of a man who was stranded
in his car and buried under four feet of snow during
a massive snowstorm in the Town of Owego, New York
on December 17, 2020

WHEREAS, The quality and sanctity of community life are cherished
values, worthy of safeguarding, and this Legislative Body is moved to
honor those individuals who serve to preserve and protect such values,
lauding particularly their unwavering courage and dedication in the
daily performance of their duties; and

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize the
caring concern and heroic acts of those exemplary police officers who
take prompt and appropriate action in emergency situations, and in doing
so, help others to avert life-threatening danger; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
New York State Police Sergeant Jason Cawley in recognition of his prompt
and heroic actions in saving the life of a man who was stranded in his
car and buried under four feet of snow during a massive snowstorm in the
Town of Owego, New York; and

WHEREAS, On Thursday, December 17, 2020, New York State Police
Sergeant Jason Cawley responded to a 911 call from a man who had called
Tioga County authorities after running off the road in the area of State
Route 17C, needing assistance due to the more than 40 inches of snow
which crippled the surrounding Binghamton area; and

WHEREAS, Upon arriving to the scene, Sergeant Jason Cawley observed
a row of mailboxes and began to dig through the snow to check addresses
when he miraculously hit the windshield of a car, locating the victim
who had been trapped in his vehicle for more than 10 hours without heat
due to a broken serpentine belt; and

WHEREAS, Sergeant Jason Cawley located the victim, who was suffering
from hypothermia and frostbite, before he was transported to Lourdes
Hospital; and

WHEREAS, Through his heroic actions, Sergeant Jason Cawley
demonstrated his character and compassion for the welfare of others,
personifying the collective concern of public servants across the
community of the State of New York who respond when others are in need
of help; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those
extraordinary individuals who unselfishly devote their lives to the
preservation of order and the protection of others are worthy and due
full praise for their commitment and noble endeavors; now, therefore, be
it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor New York State Police Sergeant Jason Cawley in recognition of his
heroic actions on December 17, 2020, noting the significance of his
selfless contributions which are in keeping with the highest traditions
of the New York State Police; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to New York State Police Sergeant Jason Cawley.
