Senate Resolution No. 497

MOURNING the death of Joan Furio, loving wife and
mother, distinguished citizen and devoted member of
her community
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body, representing the people of the State
of New York, is moved this day to pay tribute to an eminent woman of
indomitable faith and dedication whose public service and countless
accomplishments will forever stand as a paradigm and inspiration for
others; and
WHEREAS, Joan Furio of Ossining, New York, died on Wednesday,
January 6, 2021, at the age of 86, due to complications related to the
novel coronavirus; and
WHEREAS, The unity of our State and Nation is built upon the
compassion of individuals such as Joan Furio who truly upheld the values
of community life and who, through their great actions, epitomized the
best of humanity; and
WHEREAS, Born in the Bronx, New York, on January 9, 1934, to John
and Mary Turturiello, Joan Turturiello graduated from Evander Childs
High School; and
WHEREAS, Joan Furio spent her illustrious professional career as a
secretary for an advertising agency in Manhattan, before working at
Sarah Lawrence College in Yonkers for 17 years, during which time she
enjoyed taking writing and literature classes; and
WHEREAS, On January 28, 1956, Joan married the love of her life,
Joseph P. Furio, and together they raised their three wonderful
daughters, Denise, Joanne and Deirdre; and
WHEREAS, While she was passionate about many things, above all her
greatest passion was being a wife and mother, and spending time with her
beloved family, including many dear cousins, nieces, nephews and
great-nieces and nephews; and
WHEREAS, Joan Furio's infinite selflessness and benevolence will
shine on through her family's vivid and happy memories; her insight and
strength will forever serve as a beacon of love, light and hope to the
countless lives she touched; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Joan Furio leaves behind a legacy which will long endure the
passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all who were
privileged to have known and loved such an amazing woman; she will be
deeply missed and truly merits the grateful tribute of this Legislative
Body; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Joan Furio, and expressing its deepest condolences to
her family; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Joan Furio.
