MOURNING the death of Eugene Goldenberg,
distinguished citizen and devoted member of his
community

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and this
great Empire State; and

WHEREAS, Eugene "Gene" Goldenberg of Somers, New York, died on
Saturday, September 12, 2020, at the age of 84; and

WHEREAS, Eugene Goldenberg, who was a 12-year member of the Somers
Planning Board, was known for his sense of humor, infectious smile,
booming voice, and larger-than-life personality; his presence made board
meetings exciting; and

WHEREAS, Before joining the Planning Board, Eugene Goldenberg sat on
the Managing Board of Condo 22; and

WHEREAS, Eugene Goldenberg met his future wife, Hannah, when they
were just teens in Brooklyn; they raised their two daughters in New York
City where he worked in the financial field; and

WHEREAS, Eugene Goldenberg distinguished himself in his profession
and by his sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the
welfare of his community; and

WHEREAS, On Thanksgiving in 2002, Eugene and Hannah moved into a
condo at Heritage Hills to be closer to their children and
grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Eugene Goldenberg's commitment to excellence, and his
spirit of humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise,
including charitable and civic endeavors; and

WHEREAS, Eugene Goldenberg was extraordinarily proud of being a Jew
from Brooklyn who had helped establish the new St. Joseph's Catholic
Church; having grown up in a big city, his notion of what the country
should look like included a white church with a steeple; and

WHEREAS, Decades ago, Somers lost its one supermarket, a Gristedes,
which meant people had to trek over to Goldens Bridge to get their
groceries; Eugene Goldenberg played a part in paving the way for DeCicco
& Sons, an upscale grocery store, to opened in the hamlet in 2020; and

WHEREAS, Eugene Goldenberg earned the nickname "Candyman," for
constantly handing out handfuls of the old-fashioned treat, Goldenberg's
Peanut Chews; whenever he was asked if he was one of "the" Goldenbergs,
he would demure: "Oh, that's a long story."; and

WHEREAS, As much as he loved public life, family came first with
Eugene Goldenberg; his marriage to Hannah was a storybook tale of love
and friendship with their extensive travels and adventures together; and

WHEREAS, Eugene Goldenberg is survived by his wife of 59 years,
Hannah; and his two daughters, Brynn (Jay) Peltz and Toni (Arthur)
Bernstein; as well as his five grandchildren, Stephanie, Harrison, Remi,
Ethan and Luke; and

WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Eugene Goldenberg leaves behind a legacy which will long
endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all
he served and befriended; he will be missed by many; now, therefore, be
it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Eugene Goldenberg, and to express its deepest
condolences to his family; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to the family of Eugene Goldenberg.
