HONORING Dr. Alice Green upon the occasion of her
designation as recipient of the 2021 Third Age
Achievement Award by Lifepath
WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of
certain extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their
valued contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dr. Alice
Green upon the occasion of her designation as recipient of the 2021
Third Age Achievement Award by Lifepath, to be celebrated at its 25th
Annual Awards Ceremony on Friday, May 7, 2021, at Wolferts Roost Country
Club, Albany, New York; and
WHEREAS, Lifepath is dedicated to keeping older neighbors and
friends healthy and safe by providing effective programs and support to
help them stay connected to their communities; and
WHEREAS, Each year, this auspicious event recognizes the
contributions area residents and professionals have made in their
communities during the Third Age of their lives (after turning 60
years-old); Dr. Alice Green is truly deserving of this prestigious
award; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Alice Green is the Executive Director of the Center for
Law and Justice, a civil rights organization she founded in 1985, which
provides community education on civil and criminal justice, legal
guidance and advocacy, crisis intervention, as well as community
planning and organizing around criminal justice, civil rights and civil
liberties issues of particular concern to poor communities and those of
color; and
WHEREAS, In 1985, Governor Cuomo appointed Dr. Alice Green to
membership on the Citizens Policy and Complaint Review Council of the
New York State Commission of Corrections; one year later, he appointed
her to the position of Deputy Commissioner of the New York State
Division of Probation and Correctional Alternatives, during which time
she was in charge of strategic planning, policy, and information; and
WHEREAS, After leaving state service, Dr. Alice Green became
Legislative Director for the New York Civil Liberties Union where she
served as Director of their Albany Office in 1982; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Alice Green, an adjunct professor at the University at
Albany, has also taught at Russell Sage and Siena College; she began her
illustrious career as a secondary school teacher and social worker; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, for many years, Dr. Alice Green directed
Trinity Institution, a youth and family services center in Albany's
South End; in this capacity, she also worked tirelessly on community
organizing and founded the South End Scene, one of the longest published
Black newspapers in Albany; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Alice Green writes and lectures on racism and criminal
justice and often does commentary and analysis for a number of
newspapers and television and radio programs; she co-authored the book,
Law Never Here, A Social History of African American Responses to Issues
of Crime and Justice, (1999 Greenwood Press), as well as Wicked Albany
(2009) and Wicked Danville (2011 History Press), two books about
Prohibition; and
WHEREAS, In 1997, this extraordinary woman founded and is now
President of the Paden Institute and Retreat for Writers of Color
located in the Adirondack town of Essex, New York, where writers are
provided technical assistance and a free environment for writing; and
WHEREAS, With a steadfast and unwavering commitment to her
community, Dr. Alice Green is a member of the Board of Directors of the
New York State Defenders Association, a member of the Advisory Board of
the Capital District Chapter of the NYCLU, and Vice President of Senior
Hope, an alcohol and drug counseling program; she is a founder of the
African American Cultural Center of the Capital Region, and for more
than 20 years she worked as a prison volunteer; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of her tireless work, Dr. Alice Green has
been the proud recipient of numerous awards and accolades from countless
local and state organizations, including the NAACP, Rockefeller College,
National Organization for Women, New York State Bar Association, the
University at Albany, the New York Defenders Association, the New York
Civil Liberties Union, Social Justice Center, Citizen Action Social
Justice Center and the Albany Rotary Club; and
WHEREAS, Additionally, she and actor Danny Glover were co-recipients
of the John Brown Freedom of Justice Award; she received the Community
Service Award from the College of St. Rose and the Literary Legend Award
from the Albany Public Library Foundation; and
WHEREAS, In 2019, Dr. Alice Green was presented with the YWCA
Northeastern NY Women of Achievement Award, The Women's Fund of the
Capital Region Trailblazing Women of 2019 Award, and the Community
Service Award from Treatment Works; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Alice Green holds a doctorate in criminal justice and
master's degrees in education, social work, and criminology; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an
individual for the benefit of others which Dr. Alice Green has displayed
throughout her life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. Alice Green upon the occasion of her designation as recipient
of the 2021 Third Age Achievement Award by Lifepath; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Dr. Alice Green.
