RECOGNIZING May 17-20, 2022, as NYSPHSAA Coaches
Appreciation Week

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize
official weeks that are set aside to acknowledge the role and value of
coaches and to thank them for being instrumental to the development of
children and young adults throughout the State of New York; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
recognize May 17-20, 2022, as NYSPHSAA Coaches Appreciation Week; and

WHEREAS, NYSPHSAA Coaches Appreciation Week recognizes the men and
women who serve the athletes of New York State, as well as those
organizations and institutions that are committed to preparing coaches
to provide not only the technical and tactical knowledge required to
coach a sport, but also the interpersonal skills to teach the life
lessons which are the moral fiber on which our future as a State and
Nation depends; and

WHEREAS, The New York State Public High School Athletic Association
Inc. (NYSPHSAA) is a non-profit, voluntary, educational service
organization composed of public, parochial, and private schools
dedicated to providing equitable and safe competition for the students
of its member schools; and

WHEREAS, Membership is open to secondary schools providing
interschool athletic activities for boys and girls in grades 7-12; and

WHEREAS, The Association serves as a central organization through
which its member high schools in the state may cooperate to: encourage
as many pupils as possible to participate in athletic games; promote
sportsmanlike conduct in all athletic contests; maintain essential
minimum standards of eligibility; provide means to settle disputed
athletic contests amicably and authoritatively; conduct appropriate
athletic meets and tournaments; cooperate with the State Education
Department in fostering educationally sound athletic programs; adapt
rules governing sports contests to the particular conditions governing
high school competition; and continually seek data to support rule
changes leading to greater safety for high school athletes; and

WHEREAS, In conjunction with the observance of NYSPHSAA Coaches
Appreciation Week, Coaches Appreciation Day was established in 2018, as
a way to recognize all coaches at every level, including Modified, who
have coached fall, winter or spring sports within a NYSPHSAA member
school; and

WHEREAS, Furthermore, on this day student-athletes are encouraged to
thank school approved coaches who have had an impact in their life or
high school athletic career; and

WHEREAS, Coaches are a vital component in the lives of our
scholar-athletes, promoting integrity, responsibility and success both

on and off the field through skill development, foundational values and
discipline; and

WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by
individuals for the benefit of others which coaches across all
disciplines throughout the State of New York have displayed throughout
their lives; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
recognize May 17-20, 2022, as NYSPHSAA Coaches Appreciation Week; and be
it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to The New York State Public High School Athletic
Association Inc.
