MEMORIALIZING Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim
June 1-8, 2022, as Fibroadenoma Awareness Week in
the State of New York
WHEREAS, The State of New York takes great pride in recognizing
official weeks established to increase awareness of serious health
issues that affect the lives of all New Yorkers; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body hereby memorializes Governor Kathy
Hochul to proclaim June 1-8, 2022, as Fibroadenoma Awareness Week in the
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Fibroadenomas are solid, noncancerous breast lumps that
occur most often in women between the ages of 15 and 35; and
WHEREAS, A fibroadenoma might feel firm, smooth, rubbery or hard and
has a well-defined shape; generally painless, it might feel like a
marble in your breast, moving easily under your skin when examined; and
WHEREAS, Fibroadenomas vary in size, and they can enlarge or shrink
on their own; and
WHEREAS, Fibroadenomas are among the most common noncancerous
(benign) breast lumps in young women; treatment might include monitoring
to detect changes in size or feel, a biopsy to evaluate the lump or
surgery to remove it; and
WHEREAS, Researchers do not know what causes fibroadenomas, but it
is knowns that they are quite common, especially in women aged between
15 and 25; at times, a fibroadenoma can be difficult to distinguish from
cancer and therefore further testing may be required; and
WHEREAS, Up to one in six women, or 15 percent, have a fibroadenoma
at some time in their life; and
WHEREAS, Fibroadenomas are one of the most common benign tumors of
the breast in the adolescent population; they account for 68 percent of
all breast masses and 44 to 94 percent of all biopsied breast lesions;
and
WHEREAS, The large majority of fibroadenomas will not turn into
breast cancer, however, it is possible for complex fibroadenomas to
become cancerous; this type of lump is less common and faster growing
than simple fibroadenomas and contains changes such as cell overgrowth
(hyperplasia) and calcium deposits; and
WHEREAS, According to the American Cancer Society, women with
complex fibroadenomas have approximately one and a half times greater
risk of breast cancer than women with no breast lumps; and
WHEREAS, It is imperative that there be greater awareness of this
serious health condition, and more must be done to increase activity at
the local, State and National levels; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Kathy Hochul to proclaim June 1-8, 2022, as
Fibroadenoma Awareness Week in the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to The Honorable Kathy Hochul, Governor of the State of New
York.
