COMMEMORATING the 1st Anniversary of Club
Quarantine on March 19, 2021

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize that
the quality and character of life in the communities across New York
State are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those
individuals and events which would devote themselves to the welfare of
the community and its citizenry; and

WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
commemorate the 1st Anniversary of Club Quarantine which was celebrated
on Friday, March 19, 2021; and

WHEREAS, Formed by Derrick Jones, better known by his stage name
D-Nice, Club Quarantine is a weekly Instagram event that began on March
19, 2020, to safely bring people together during the COVID-19 pandemic;
and

WHEREAS, Throughout this last year of anxiety, fear and distress,
millions of people from all over the world tuned in to Club Quarantine
which garnered attention from notable personalities including Jennifer
Lopez, Michelle Obama, Oprah, and President Joe Biden; and

WHEREAS, Born in Harlem, Derrick Jones moved to the Bronx when he
was 15 years-old; today, he is a well-known American disc jockey,
beatboxer, rapper, producer, and photographer who began his career in
the mid-1980s when he formed Boogie Down Productions along with KRS-One;
together, they started the Stop the Violence Movement in response to the
killing of founding member Scott La Rock; and

WHEREAS, Devoted to his cause, D-Nice brought together many
contemporary East Coast hip hop rap stars to record a song about
anti-violence entitled "Self Destruction," with all proceeds donated to
the National Urban League; the song debuted at No. 1 on the first week
of Billboard's Hot Rap Songs existence and held the spot for ten
consecutive weeks; and

WHEREAS, D-Nice is also a party Dee Jay and celebrity photographer
who spun the vinyl for President Barack Obama's 2012 inauguration, and
shot portraits of celebrities such as Idris Elba, Tyra Banks, and John
Legend; and

WHEREAS, During a time when most of the world was consumed with
uncertainly and news of death, through the tireless efforts of D-Nice,
Club Quarantine has been a safe place to connect with others, to share
inspirational music and stories, and serve as a positive and powerful
influence; and

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the

recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 1st Anniversary of Club Quarantine on March 19, 2021;
and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Derrick Jones, D-Nice.
