CELEBRATING the dedication of the new columbarium
at the Glenwood Cemetery, and paying special
recognition to Dan Russell, President of the
Glenwood Cemetery Association, and the many
community volunteers who assisted with the
installation
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to call attention
to those historic sites which serve as lasting reminders of our rich and
unique past; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its
long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to
celebrate the dedication of the new columbarium at the Glenwood Cemetery
on Saturday, May 22, 2021, and to pay special recognition to Dan
Russell, President of the Glenwood Cemetery Association, and the many
community volunteers who assisted with the installation; and
WHEREAS, A community is only as great as those persons and
organizations that provide exemplary service, whether through
participation in voluntary programs or other endeavors, or simply
through a lifetime of good citizenship; and
WHEREAS, Glenwood Cemetery, a historic cemetery located in Lockport,
New York, sits on acres of rolling hills on the Niagara Escarpment; and
WHEREAS, The Glenwood Cemetery Association owns 60 acres of land, 30
of it being undeveloped; it is estimated that 30,000 people have been
buried in the Glenwood Cemetery, some dating back as far as the 1820s;
notable burials in the cemetery include Governor Washington Hunt,
William George Morgan, and the Sutherland Sisters, just to name a few;
and
WHEREAS, The new columbarium is a room/building with niches for
funeral urns to be stored; anonymously donated, it was put together and
placed as three separate units on Glenwood's grass; it now stands on a
cement pad close to some of the cemetery's mausoleums; this new final
resting place can host two urns in each of its 250 spaces; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when events
such as the dedication of the new columbarium at the Glenwood Cemetery
are brought to our attention, they should be celebrated and recognized
by all the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
celebrate the dedication of the new columbarium at the Glenwood
Cemetery, and to pay special recognition to Dan Russell, President of
the Glenwood Cemetery Association, and the many community volunteers who
assisted with the installation; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be
transmitted to Dan Russell, President, Glenwood Cemetery Association.
